My 2nd great grandmother was Bridgit Delia Snee. Family history (I haven't been able to verify it yet) is that she was born 15 Aug 1844/45 in County Mayo. She left for America in the early 1860's. She traveled with her father, James, and her siblings (James, Patrick, Anne and Mary). Her mother was Margaret Walsh. They landed in Boston, Massachusetts, she married Patrick Brennan of Sligo, Ireland in 1864. They eventually moved to Minnesota, where they lived the rest of their lives.
I am looking for any family information to continue tracing my Irish roots.

I looked at the 1856 griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Mayo. There was only one James Snee listed in Cloonturk townland, Aghamore civil parish. Aghamore is in East Co. Mayo close to the Co. Roscommon border.

    http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/mayo/aghamore.htm

Unfortunately the RC records for Aghamore church do not begin until 1864. I checked the Roots Ireland indexes and ther were no Bridget Snee baptisms in their data base for all of Mayo from 1839-1849. I also could not locate a marriage record for James and Margaret in all of Mayo.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • According to our family researchers ...

On14 Jan 1833 Thady Snee married Mary Donlevy, both born about 1813 in Kilmovee, Achonry Mayo, Ireland. Witnesses were James Dowleny and Thos Snee. http://www.mayo-ireland.ie/en/towns-villages/kilmovee/kilmovee.html

Their son “Timothy” Thadeus/Thady Snee was born in 1837 and was a farmer in Kilkelly, County Mayo, Ireland when, on 13 Feb 1855, at the Kilmovee Parish Church, Mayo, he married Mary “Maria” Noon. (Birth:  Abt. 1830 - Mayo, Ireland Death:  27 Jan 1904 - Mayo, Ireland) Witnesses were Thomas Tarpy, Bridget Byrne.

Their 6 children were all born in Culmore, just north of Kilkelly Mayo:

    Catherine Snee - 1856

    Bridget Snee - 1857

Michael Joseph Snee Birth 29 Sep 1862, married Catherine Burke on the 7th July 1892 im Townsville, Queensland, Australia where he died on 20 Jul 1946

Patrick Snee (spouse Mary Tighe) Birth 29 Jan 1865 - Death possibly USA

Margaret Snee Birth 12 Jan 1870

Michael Snee (my Grandfather) told of his having to leave school at the age of 12 when his father died in 1874 and in 1876 went to work in Liverpool as a council grass cutter, where he developed skill with the scythe. His brother Patrick and sister Bridget migrated to America and his sister Maggie remained in Ireland as a schoolteacher.

Michael, aged 22, emigrated from London on 13th June 1888 aboard “Taroba” arriving in Brisbane on 17th August. He could read and write and took up work as a road builder with the Townsville Corporation (Council) and later with Queensland Railways as a lengths-man or fettler.

  • Mikeyj1234:

According to the subscription site Roots Ireland, Bernard Snee was baptized in Kilmovee RC parish on January 17 1858. Father Bernard and mother Bridget Hunt. He had a sister Jane baptized December 1 1859. Both records show the family lived in Kilkelly.

The elder Bernard Snee died in 1885  see 7th record   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

I was not able to find a death record for Bridget.

  • Hi everyone. My name is James Snee, Great x2 grandson of John Snee who was born in Kiltimagh circa 1850. He married Mary Gaven and the couple emigrated to Yorkshire in England sometime before the birth of their son James in 1878. If anyone has any details of them it would be very much appreciated.

    Best wishes,

    James

  • James:

I checked for a marriage record for John Snee to Mary Gaven and did not locate a church record or a civil record which leads me to believe that they married in England. Killedan/Kiltimagh RC baptismal records start in 1861 which is to late for your John Snee. I also checked the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Killedan civil parish and there were no Snees listed. Possibly the family was from Kilmovee parish which had a number of Snees. Do you have the names of John's parents?

  • I think we're related. We have/had many Catherines, Bridgets, and James Snees in our family. My great-grandfather was a James Snee from Kilkelly Mayo, but he was born in Dec 1888. He moved to the US in 1909 with an older brother (maybe John Snee born around 1882). His mom Bridget might have remarried into the Kenzie family.

She was born about 1850 and would have originally been married to a Snee. They lived near Shammerdoo. Does anyone have any info on Rose, Kate, or Hugh Kenzie who were born in the later 1800s? They'd be my half great aunts and uncles.

Does Cahesconkil mean or sound like anything?
