The Griffiths Valuation was conducted in Co. Mayo in 1856. If your Anthony was still alive in 1856, it looks like he lived in Addergoole civil parish. Also, I checked the 1901 census for Cloghbrack Far townland www.nationalarchives.ie and there were four Rowland families. Not sure of their connection to your family.

  • Hi Jill,

I've been having a look for your Rowlands.

Someone else on ancestry had Mary's surname - Neary.

On the rootsireland.ie site I found the marriage record (attached) for Mary Neary and Anthony Rowland as 1840 in Mayo so the children must have been born in the 1840's.

    I found 2: Michael 1842 and Mary 1843 - attached.

I have attached the 4 birth/baptism matches for Mary Neary born 1813 but only the Wicklow one is spelt accurately. There are none in Mayo.

I couldn't find any birth record for Anthony Rowland around or before 1813.

rootsireland is a pay site so you will need to register and pay for the records if you want details of which parish in Mayo they lived and their parents' names (marriage record). Records cost a few dollars each.

I'm not sure it's the same Anthony Rowland.  The family tree I see on Ancestry shows he died in Pittsburgh, Pa. and I am not even sure the older Anthony ever came to America.  I also see some profiles show an Anthony married to a Mary Timlin as well as a Mary Ginty or a Maria T. Dowd.  I wish I have more to share but I only have the three brothers becasue they all settled in the same area of West Virginia and their birth years are in the census. I may be off a little on my estimate for Anthony and Mry's borth years. I tend to assume young since peole back then got married at much earlier ages, as least as far as the women are concerned...

  • Hi

My wife is a Rowland (Eskeragh/Bellacorick). The name is very common (and has been for at least the last 100 years) in the North Mayo region from Ballina into Erris. Some of the previous posters have highlighted some useful sources. You maybe able to find some records of family members that didn't emigrate in the 1911 census. I know that that around the early 1900s there were many Rowlands from Bangor Erris to Bellacorick. Even though the name is popular it shouldn't be too hard to trace some sort of records or someone who remembers some of the family. Mayo people have long memories of who comes from where.

Do you have any information on the family that didn't emigrate. Sadly my wife's grandmother passed away last year. She had a wonderful memory and could tell you stories of families that left Ireland in the 19th century. Probably stories that she was passing on from her parents/grand parents.

Good luck in the search for your past.
