Roger Kane was tried on 10 March 1849 for sheep stealing and sentenced to 7 years. He was 20 years of age at the time and transported to the colony of Van Diemans Land on the ship London (2). Departure date was 20 December 1850 and departure port Kingston. He left behind his mother Kathleen, brothers James, Hugh, Edward, Walter and a sister Mary. All were living at their native place of Mayo.
He was transported with his brother John who committed the crime with him and was transported on the same ship which arrived in Van Diemans Land on the 19 March 1851.
I have been trying for some years to locate where Roger Keane was born and lived prior to his transportation. Any information would be appreciated regarding this and the family that he left behind in Co. Mayo.

Hi Kathleen,
on rootsireland.ie I searched for Keane births for births/baptisms 1820-1840 in Mayo and found:
Roger 0
John 6
Hugh 0
Edward 1 (O'Keane)
James 1
amd Mary 7
On Griffiths Valuation (freely searchable) there are Hughs at Aglish (Castlebar) and Kilmana (Westport)
The 1901 & 1911 censuses are also frely searchable and there are some Hughs and Edwards about the right ages on the 1901.
rooteireland is pay-per-view so perhaps if you choose one of the birth records that looks about right and get a parish name you could compare it with the Griffiths and census locations.
