My maiden name is Devan and through Ancestry, I have put together my Devan family tree. My branch of Devans lived in Western Pennsylvania, Fayette County, where my father grew up and where I was born. There is a Devan family cemetery in the small town of Hopwood, PA. The 1850 Pennsylvania Census lists a Patrick Devan 75 yrs. and his wife Margaret 73 yrs, living in Fayette County, both listed as born in Ireland. He would have been born in 1775 in Ireland and she in 1778. I haven't been able to find any record of when they came to the United States. Patrick would be my 3rd great-grandfather - I think.
Just finding on Griffiths Valuation a listing for Patrick Devan, John and Richard Devan in County Cavan Parish of Templeport.
Any help would be great!

Debbie:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I looked at this site maintained by one of our volunteers /www.swilson.info/sdist.php and it shows a total of 27 Devan records in Ireland across six counties including the three you located in Cavan. The other issue is that their name could have been modified from the much more common surname of Devany/Devanny when they came to America.
There are very few church records available for Ireland back to then 1770s. I would suggest that you consider DNA testing. Through that process you may get some matches that might give you some clues about your Devan origins in Ireland.

Thank you.
I've done the DNA testing but no connections so far. I'll keep looking.

Their ages on census may have been inaccurate. Ages of older people especially could be way out.
Were other Devan people in the cemetery descendents of Patrick & Margaret or related to them?

Debbie, I don't have any information about Patrick, but you and I are related. I am a descendant of Patrick's son George. Patrick is my 4X great grandfather.
