Patrick Concannon born Mayo emigrated to England last century , settled in Derbyshire and his son Malick, married my Grandfathers cousin Annie Elizabeth Clay , they had 3 children William , Mary and Elizabeth .
I will post more details of Patrick if possible , as i would like to know where in Mayo he was born , many of Patricks descendents live on around the Matlock area The Concannon name is strong , incredibly all great craic and highly musical , and also succesfull in their own right, Patricks genetics are powerfully evident in his family today and he would be very proud of them all .
If anyone can help in any way ,then i would be delighted to hear something , God Bless ...

Bill,
A little more information would be helpful. When was Patrick born?
Did he marry in Ireland or England? If in England, do you have his marriage cert (which should contain his father?s name)?

Hello Elwyn,
Many thanks for your swift response , i will get more details on Patrick very soon hopefully , and leave them on the site. Ive only found out during the last few days, about Patrick and his son Malick who married my Grandfathers cousin Annie .
I have a feeling that Patrick married here ,also to a local girl , so hopefully i will find some more details to enable a better chance of finding where Patrick came from.
Many thanks again ,i hope to here from you again , All the very best

Hi Bill & Elwyn
There are several public member trees on ancestry which have Patrick Concannon born in MENLOUGH Galway 24 Dec 1808. Married Bridget Coen 18 Feb 1833 in Tuam Galway; children Malachy & Mary.
I don't think there's a Matlock in Mayo so could this be your Concannons?
However, I couldn't find this birth record or the marriage on rootsireland!

Hello Col ,
Many thanks for your response , Patricks son Malachy married my Grandfathers cousin Annie , Patrick was living in the next village to us , called Winster , it is in the County of Derbyshire ( England ).
Our village is called Wensley and the landscape and way of life, until 40 years ago, was very similar to life in the west of Ireland , as it also was, during the same time periods, Patrick would have felt at home im sure.
I am going to do more research into Patrick and his circumstances , as i only found out about him this week! The details i have indicate he came from Mayo , but that is not confirmed as yet , I dont know if he married a local girl here , but he could have been married in Ireland and brought over his son Malachy to England ? this is pure speculation but i will do my best to get more details .
Best Wishes and many thanks Bill
-
Col, and all
been to the churchyard today in our village , Malachi and Annie Concannon both buried together in a lovely spot ,the sun was shining on their grave.
My parents are both buried close by, anyway MalachIi and Annie were both born in 1881 , so your man Patrick born in Galway 1808 is unlikely to be the father of our Malachi. I will get some details of Patrick next week , hopefully and will keep you posted , i estimate Patrick was born around 1855 as Malachi was born 1881, this is a guess of course .
many thanks again regards now

I knew a Joe Sweeney of Achill , i worked with him in the 1970s in Milton Keynes , for George Wimpey , Joe must have been late 60s (years old) if not early 70s back then ,....a great guy

Looking at the 1911 census for Matlock, Derbyshire, I see the following family:
Patrick Concannon, head, 51 widower, born Mayo
Malachi, son, single 29, born Winster, England
Mary dau, single 25, born Winster, England
Winnie Concannon dau 21, single b Winster
Ellen dau 19. Single b Winster
The census appears to indicate that Patrick had had 6 children, all of whom were still alive in 1911. The 1901 census reveals that the 2 missing children were Margaret & Tom. Patrick is shown as married in 1901 but his wife is not at the same address.
So it looks as though Patrick moved to England around 1880 or thereabouts and that at all of his children were born in England.
You may need to get one of the children?s birth certificates to get Patrick?s wife?s maiden name. That in turn may enable you to trace his roots in Ireland (ie via his marriage and father?s name).

Col , ive had some amazing help as you can see from my messages , Patrick was born 1860 in Mayo according to the 1911 Derbyshire census. Patrick had 6 children all born in England, and his eldest son Malachi , married my Grandfathers cousin Annie . It has been suggested i get one of Patricks childrens birth certificates and hopefully this will reveal Patricks wifes name and his fathers name.
Im not sure what to do after that , but im sure that it will help , i dont know how many Patrick Concannons were born in 1860 in County Mayo ? Will there be such records kept in Mayo ?
regards now Bill Clay
-
Col ...just read your last message ! totally amazing , i am so grateful to both you and Elwyn , it means so much to me it really does , something in my heart , i cant explain it .
I think you have found our Patrick ? with his Father called Malachy and Patrick naming his first son Malachy , its looking very positive . If i get Patricks fathers name , will this confirm we have our man ?
regards and again my heartfelt thanks to you and Elwyn

What appears to be Malachi?s birth was registered in Bakewell, Derbyshire July ? Sept 1881 Volume 7b page 726. You can order a copy of that birth cert from GRO Southport for ?9.25. You'll get his mother's name from that.
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
I have looked for the family in the 1881 and 1891 English censuses. (The children's places of birth suggest they were in Winster, but I can't find them. Probably transcription problems). Perhaps you can find them Col?

Also Col , Patrick had a daughter he named Winifred , so he named his 2 oldest children after his Parents Malachy and Winifred ! you must have our Patrick ? ....

The 1901 Irish Census has the following:
Residents of House 6 Cregduff Kilcommon Mayo
Concannon Malachy 63 Male Head of Family Roman Catholic
Concannon Minnie 62 Female Wife Roman Catholic
Concannon Malachy 25 Male Son Roman Catholic
Concannon Julie 22 Female Daughter Roman Catholic
Both Malachys were farmers; Julie was a dressmaker All spoke both Irish & English
Minnie is a mistranscription for Winnie
ALL WERE BORN IN MAYO
There is a baptism record for Malachy (not sure why it didn't show up earlier!) 1875 parents Malachy & Winnifred Kilcommon & Robeen.
They do not appear in the 1911 Census however

Col ...how can i thank you and Elwyn for everything you have done ? If you knew my life story then you would begin to understand the profound and wonderful effect upon me , of knowing all of this family background , so much now makes sense . I have been to The West of Ireland many times , around Mayo particularly , this is really weird because something seemed to pull me there , i knew there was a connection , strange don't you think ?
My family always loved the Concannon branch of our family so much, they were, and are a joy to be around .
I still want to find who Patrick married and was the mother to his 6 kids , who include our Malachi , The Concannons continue a great musical talent ,incredibly with even the very latest generation ....Malachy Senior can be proud , he lives on .
from a truly grateful Bill Clay......to Col and Elwyn , i hope we can continue with this
-
Bill,
I suggest you order Malachi?s English birth certificate to confirm his mother?s maiden name. You have the full details and it?s a straightforward procedure. It will cost you ?9.25. I suspect his mother was named Catherine and died in Jul ? Sept 1899 (Bakewell) Vol 7b page 411. Estimated year of birth 1850. Patrick?s shown as married in the 1901 census but his wife isn?t there and I think in fact she was already dead. (If you buy the death certificate you?ll probably find out for sure).
I think that the family that Col has found in Cregduff, Mayo may well be your family. I say that because there?s a Winnie Concannon in it. And you?ll notice that Patrick?s second daughter was also called Winnie. There is a traditional naming pattern in Ireland (and Scotland). It isn?t always followed but when it is, it goes as follows:
The 1st son was usually named after the father's father
The 2nd son was usually named after the mother's father
The 3rd son was usually named after the father
The 4th son was usually named after the father's eldest brother
The 5th son was usually named after the mother's eldest brother
The 1st daughter was usually named after the mother's mother
The 2nd daughter was usually named after the father's mother The 3rd daughter was usually named after the mother
The 4th daughter was usually named after the mother's eldest sister
The 5th daughter was usually named after the father's eldest sister
Winnie b c 1890 was Patrick?s second daughter. So she should be named after the father?s mother. I think that could be the Winnie in Cregduff.
Cregduff is about 10 miles south of Claremorris. It?s off the L1610 minor road which runs between Ballindine and Kilmaine. I?d say you would need to ask locally for detailed directions. However the Concannon farm is shown on the Griffiths on-line map, so it shouldn?t be too difficult to find.
I suggest you get Malachi?s birth certificate to confirm his mother?s name. Then come back to us with that information and we?ll look for the relevant marriage certificate for his parents. If we can do that, it should have Patrick?s address (hopefully Cregduff) which will then confirm we have traced the right family for you.

Bill I hope you can act on Elwyn's advice and find this elusive woman!
The free UK BDM has the marriage of Patrick Concannon March 1880 Bakewell Vol 7b page 958 which should also have his wife's name.
It's been an interesting chase but you're closing in now!

Col ...will do as you suggest , then i will post the details of Malachi's Mother ...if she died in 1899 Patrick was left with a big young family to manage.
Many many thanks again Col/ Elwyn , amazing what you and Elwyn have done for me
-
Elwyn ...i will do as you suggest and get the name of Patricks wife , your help has been incredible and i hope we can continue this together with Col.
I think we have our man in Malachy , the Father of Patrick and Grandfather of our Malachi !
It seems that Patricks wife ( Catherine ? ) may have died young and left Patrick with a brood of young children to raise , anyway its my turn to do some work now , so i will post what i find asap .
many many thanks Elwyn
-
Col and Elwyn,
Iv'e ordered Malachi's birth certificate but it could take up to 15 days ! hopefully we can find the name of Patricks wife, Malachi's Mother , will it have Patricks Fathers name on it ?
regards Bill
-
Bill,
Malachi?s birth certificate will give you his mother?s full maiden name, which we need to be sure we are tracing the right family. It won't contain Patrick's father's name.
Patrick?s marriage certificate should give you his father?s name and occupation which we also need to be sure of tracing the right family in Ireland. It will also confirm his wife?s name for you. So you really need both certificates. Having the two also provides a cross check to prevent mistakes. (It?s quite easy to trace another family by mistake).
I think Malachi?s mother was probably Catherine/Kate McTigh but let?s wait and see. McTigh(e) is a common Mayo name, so I wouldn?t be surprised if either Patrick brought her over, or she followed him, soon after he moved to Derbyshire from Ireland. Probably in 1880.
So if I were you, I would order the marriage cert Col found, as well as Malachi's birth cert.
Here's alink to the 1911 Irish census for Cregduff which gives you the family there that we suspect are Patrick's parents (ie Malachi & Winnie). You'll also see Patrick had a brother also named Malachi who looks to be set to take ober the farm in due course. Malachi junior married around 1906 and has 2 children.

Bill,
Just to add a few other bits and pieces, Malachi Concannon senior (who I suspect is Patrick?s father) appears to have died in Cregduff in Apr ? Jun 1915. His son Malachi appears to have died there in Jan ? Mar 1940. Winifred appears to have died in the Cregduff area in July ? Sept 1923.
There were a total 3 Concannon farms in Cregduff in 1901, and two in 1911. These other families are very likely to be related to Malachi?s. In 1901:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Kilcommon/Cregduff/1578726/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Kilcommon/Cregduff/1578729/
And in 1911 just the one:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Kilcommon/Cregduff/706390/
With a bit of work, you may be able to link all these families up.
I looked in the current phone book but cannot see any Concannon households in the Cregduff area today. However a lot of people are ex-directory so that doesn?t mean there aren?t any there. It looks to me as though there was at least one family still there in the 1940s, so if you knock on doors locally you might find someone who can tell you of living relatives in the general area, or at least where they moved to.

Elwyn ....you continue to amaze me ! i will obtain the certificates you suggest and will post the details they will provide us with , i feel we have the right family but you and Col are correct, we need to be sure .
I intend to visit Mayo in the spring next year with a Mayo man who lives here in Derbyshire ,a good friend who has many family around Castlebar/ Westport. Kilcommon looks like it could catch some rough weather off the atlantic ? It would be nice to visit when the spring weather is on us , I'll see if i can find any remaining Concannons around the area , visit Achill and see the Sweeney's ...etc
Your input over the last few dayst has been spectacular and has made the last few days really satisfying for me , it shows that we still live in a world where people can be bothered to help others ...
thanks to you and Col again regards now Bill
-
Col and Elwyn ,
Ive ordered both Malachis's birth certificate (1881) and his fathers and mothers , Patrick and Catherine ? marriage certificate (1880) , so i will post the details as soon as i can.
I hope there are a few of my Concannons remaining in Mayo , sadly the last Clay in my village of Wensley ( my Auntie Mary ) died recently so no Clays left in our village ending at least 500 years of Clays (on record ) living in Wensley.
A fairly poor rural area , we all left to seek our fortunes elsewhere in the world , the world is now a small place , i guess , ive been travelling for over 40 years ..its time to settledown , i see a nice building plot in Cregduff for sale on the internet !!
regards Bill

The only entry in the Irish phone book that I could find for Concannon in Mayo, but there are 18 others in other counties so might be worth dropping them a line

Col,
I think you?ve possibly only searched the Business directory for Mayo. If you click on the ?Residential? section option that?ll bring up 18 domestic numbers for the surname in Co. Mayo, but none of them are in Cregduff. There?s a couple near Ballinrobe that might be worth contacting but even they look to be 10 miles away or more from Cregduff.
Bill,
If you are following this, if you wnat to see the location of Concannons in Mayo today (at least those in the phone boook) you can search on this link. Enter Concannon and Mayo, in the 2 search boxes, and then press the residential option. (The page is preset to Business).

Col and Elwyn ,
You have both "come up with goods" again , Maybe some of Malachys (Senior) ancestors are still in Mayo, but surely some will remain somewhere in Ireland . It would be unlikely they all left , in my experience it seems that a few from every generation stayed behind the manage the land. Even during the hard times when which resulted in significant emigration particularly from rural areas in the west of Ireland, just like the north of my county Derbyshire , a mass exodus starting in the 1960s from my village.
Most of the villages in North Derbyshire have very few truly local families remaining , the houses are bought as holiday homes or have been bought by city people from Manchester , Derby , Nottingham , Leeds ,Birmingham etc all cities within 1 hrs drive ! All the small farms land has been absorbed in the surrounding farms and the farm houses and buildings are luxury homes for the wealthy.
The world changed and this was inevitable , i have been blessed with an amazing life , and i thank God, i left my village at the age of 17 and have lived all around the world . It is however, great to be back here.
I hope i dont bore you with my rantings !!! God Bless Bill
-
sorry , i didnt mean to compare the emigration from Ireland to the emigration from rural England, i know Irish History and i want to clarify that point .....that there is none or little comparison , my apologies , i was simply illustrating my point
regards and respect to all Bill Clay

Col and Elwyn ,
I hope you are both well and indeed seasons greetings to ALL in Ireland ....Im pleased to say that i received the copy of Patrick and Kate's marriage which took place in Bakewell on 7/2/1880 .
Patrick was aged 21 and Kate was aged 28, Patricks Father is named as Malachy Concannon and Kates Father is named as Martin McTique (not sure if the spelling of Kate's maiden name is correct)?.
This seems to confirm that you have indeed indentified my family in Mayo ! and i am delighted and grateful , i hope to soon receive a copy of Malachy's (son of Patrick) birth certificate , i will post details of that, when i can .
All the very best to everyone, God Bless all of us, Bill
-
Kate's maiden name is spelt with a g not a q as i previously spelt, it also shows her Father, Martin,as deceased at this time of their marriage ..many thanks Bill
-
All the best for 2015 to all in Ireland ,
Received the birth certificate today for Malachi Concannon born Winster (parents home village) 2:6:1881 father Patrick Concannon aged 22 formerly of Mayo ,mother Catherine (formerly McTigue) aged 29 formerly of Mayo , so i guess this confirms you gave me the correct family in Mayo ? regards now Bill Clay
