MATTHEW McHALE born c1801 and his wife MARY c1811 appear in Liverpool from 1851 Census and onward. Children PATRICK c1828, RICHARD c1834, MATTHEW (my gg grandfather) c1836 and JOHN c1836.
I am only assuming at this stage that they came from Mayo in the 1840's- they are not on the UK 1841 Census. Mayo is most likely as many Irish living in the same general area of Liverpool were from there.
GGGrandfather MATTHEW did however marry (1857) CATHERINE BROWN who is shown on later Censuses as being from Galway.
I have not come across MATTHEW McHALE (1803) at all.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I think a good place to start would be with the Tithes, which had head-of-households from 1823 - 1837. There are a lot of McHales in Mayo, so I think your guess is likely. You can link to a search for McHale's in Mayo here:
Note that the transcriptions are quite often quite poor, and not all given names are written out (plenty of M or Ml McHales listed).
You can also look at Griffiths valuation (taken from the late 1840s to about 1858) here: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml - there are a lot of McHales listed.
If you get some indication about what parish he might have been from, I could then help you with other places to look.
