Greeting from Kerry,
My dad and aunt have always said we came from Co. Mayo but I had assumed they meant the surname Dowd in general.
Now they have said that it was my 3rd great grandfather that moved to Kerry from Mayo. His name was Michael Dowd and was born roughly in 1805. He had 3 children that I know of - Timothy, Michael & Mary.
In Kerry, they lived in the parish of Ballymacelligott, townlands may have been Crag, Tylogh, or Rathanny (Arabela) all in Ballymac.
Are there any Dowd's in Mayo that may remember a story like this. I am so sorry I dont even know where to begin but I do love Mulranny.
I hope this sounds familiar to someone and would love to hear from them.

I think I replied to your message on the Mayo mailing list, but I'll add some more comments here. Depending upon when your 3xGGF moved, there could be a number of reasons.
1) I've recieved got some papers on my Loughney ancestors that some of them were wanted by the British because of the 1798 uprising. There were any number of people with prices on their heads; forced exile and forced conscription.
2) The famine hit Mayo particularly hard, though it was nearly as bad in Kerry as well.
Do you have more information on your 3xGGF - did he move as a child; did he move with his family; do you know when/where his wife & children were born? Those pieces of info might tell us something.

Oh wow John thanks for the info, good to know.
I dont know much about him only the year he was born 1805. He son was Timothy (1836-1903) and I think he was born in Kerry. I was incorrect originally (Timothy, Mary & Michael) were Timothy's (1836-1903) children.
I cannot find anything about Michael or a wife. Michael is mentioned on the marriage cert of Timothy Dowd but nothing else.
I will keep quizing them at home and see if i can dig a bit more. The Irish records are free to access this weekend on Ancestry so fingers crossed I might find something there.
