I am searching for John Flynn (b. approx. 1805-1943) originally from Ballina area and later from Lacken Strand/Killala. He was married to Mary (Mollie) Doherty (b. approx. 1810-?) and they had the following children - Mary (1825+/-), Bridget (1826+/-), Michael (1828), Martin (1830) and Patrick (1836+/-). John was a fisherman and his grandson wrote that he moved the family from Ballina to Killala to be closer to the shore and would sell his catch in Ballina. He supposedly died at sea around 1843. As the grandson wrote, after the father's death (and possibly before) the girls emmigrated to Canada and the boys followed as money came in from the girls for fare. Martin and Patrick were the last to leave in about 1847. I know John's widow, Mary, went to Canada just not when.

I am also searching for a Richard McAndrew (1793-?) and his wife Mary Barrett (1792-1868) who also lived in Mayo County and emmigrated possibly in the early 1840's to Canada. I do not know more than that. I know they had at least 5 children - Thomas (b. about 1819), Mary (b. about 1823), Hanora (b. 1828), John (b about 1829) and Martin (b. about 1830). They all left Ireland for Canada but I do not know if they all left at once.

  • Hi,

Ancestry has some records, which may or may not be related.

    Name: Mary Flynn
    Birth Date: 6 Sep 1823
    Baptism Date: 9 Sep 1823
    Baptism Place: Kilmoremoy, Mayo, Ireland
    Other Parish Name: Ballina
    Father: John Flynn
    Mother: Margaret Hoban

I saw quite a few records for a Peter Flynn, but I don't know if he is related.

    Child was marked as illegitimate.

I found a Patrick Flynn & James Flynn on the tithes in Kilmoremoy Parish (the Parish of Ballina) https://familysearch.org/search/collection/results?count=20&query=%2Bsu… - I don't know if they were related or not.

There is a John Flynn in Kilmoremoy here: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-14161-29641-67?cc=1804886 - this was taken in 1834.

I didn't find any matches on the Flax Grower's list from 1796, but that makes sense as he was a fisherman.  You can find that list here: http://www.failteromhat.com/flax1796all.php

As I have ancestors from Ballina & Killala (Kilcummin) areas, I would say that it will be harder to go back much further, as there are not really any records.  I'll still take a look and see what I can find.  Is there anything specific that you'd like to find out?

I'll take a look at your 2nd query in a bit.

  • I know that there are McAndrews and Barretts in Kilfian Parish, some records are available here: kilfianandcrossmolinarcrecords.com - I didn't find anything more specific on the names you gave, though.

I did find a couple of Richard McAndrews in Mayo on the tithe records:
    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/results?count=50&query=%2Bgi…

note that some of the entries are duplicates, and some of the dates are not correct.

  • Thank you for your quick response! I have not heard of a Margaret Hoban as being Mary Flynn's mother. All I have to go by is a letter written by John Flynn's grandchild as an older adult. It was written in the 1950's I believe no too long before he passed. John Flynn was my 2x great grandfather. I only know what was written in the letter as my father spoke very little of his childhood and family. I am trying to find family in Ireland. I have been able to find many relatives either here in the US or in Canada but this is the closest I get to locating people in Ireland (I am Irish through both parents).

On my mother's side I have Coghlan, Lantry (Landry), Fitzpatrick and Nolan and on my father's side I have Flynn, McAndrew, Barrett, Birt and Craig but I have not been able to successfully link to any of them in Ireland except for this tip to Ballina and Killala. I did find a marriage register on ancestry for Thomas Coghlan and Catherine Launtry in Co. Mayo but I have no proof it belongs to my relatives.

I have read that vital records were not required until the mid 1850's so all the records I am looking for would probably be old church records which are hard to locate especially if the people were poor and could not afford to pay to register their "events". Is this correct?

Can you explain what the tithes are? Would these list the head of household only and are they agricultural?

Thank you for all your help.
