Researching info for Peter Gibbons. DOB 1821 (approximate). Emigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Married Ann Duffy in Montreal, May 29, 1865. Had at least one child, also Peter Gibbons, born in Montreal Nov 19, 1876. Possible other children: Richard, Margaret, Thomas. Our family oral history is that Peter Gibbons came from County Mayo.

Civil registration of births in Ireland did not begin until 1864.
Very few parishes in Co. Mayo had RC church records ( I'm assuming your family was RC) that went back to the early 1820s.
I did check Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie and they had an 1824 baptismal record for a Peter Gibbons in the Kilmoremoy/Ballina RC records. The fathers name was Thomas and the mother was Sarah.
I would be very cautious about this record until you can find other evidence since so many parishes are missing for that time period and Peter Gibbons was fairly common name. Do you have Peter's death record which might show his parents names?
By the way, Roots is a pay site to view the transcription of a church record.
