Patrick Wynn (Winn), born 1845 in County Mayo is married to Mary Cullen, born 1848 in County Mayo. I think they emigrated to the USA between 1865 and 1868, but this is only a guess. There are too many Patrick Wynn in the immigration records. In the USA 1870 census they are living in New York City and have a son John J that is born in July 1869. Patrick's occupation is quarryman. Their son Thomas is the person who says they were born in County Mayo. All children are born in the USA. They both die in the 1890's, before there is much information needed for death certificates.

Their children are:
John J., born in July 1869
Daniel Peter, born December 1872
Thomas Edward, born October 1874
Mary F., born July 1877
Patrick Franklin, born September 1879
James R, born May 1884
Francis, born July 1887
Peter Richard, March 1890

John E. Gaffney, born May 1, 1844 is married to Elizabeth (Eliza) Wynn (Winn), born November 1, 1847. Their daughter says they were both born in County Roscommon. However, I believe Elizabeth and John  are almost definitely family to Patrick and Mary Wynn. They  live close to each other in several different places, have the same occupation and are sponsors for each other's children. I believe that Elizabeth is Patrick's sister.  Of course, the information of them being born in different counties questions that, but I know the counties are neighbors. The parents of Elizabeth are listed as Daniel Wynn and Bridget (Mary) Kilroy.  John E. Gaffney's parents are listed as Patrick Gaffney and Catherine Cullen. Cullen is the maiden name of Patrick Wynn's wife Mary from the above information. John E says he arrives in USA in the late 1860's. All their children are born in the USA. They are also married in the USA.
Their children are:
Mary H, born 1877
Catherine born 1880
Barney, born 1883
Elizabeth, born 1885
Patrick, born 1885
Jeremiah, born 1887

There also is also a James Wynn who also follows the two above families across the country, lives near the above two listed families, and sponsors their children also. He is born in 1843 in Ireland. He dies in 1893 before much information is needed for death certificates. His wife is Anna, born 1845 in Ireland. Both give no county of birth.  Her parents are Michael Meehan and Anna Fitzpatrick. Their children are Thomas, Catherine, Charles, Christine, John Patrick, Ann Elizabeth, Owen J.

In the 1870 census several Wynn men live in the same apartment building, next door to Patrick and Mary Cullen Wynn. They may or may not be family. William, born 1849, Thomas, born 1847, Michael, born 1846. I am unable to follow them in records.  They are quarrymen and so was Patrick Wynn in the 1870 census.

  • Hi Barbara

I don't know if you've looked on www.rootsireland.ie/ for your people.

I found baptism records for children of Daniel Wynn 1845 + - 10 years in Roscommon but when the mother's first or last name was added to the search criteria there were no matches

The records were all from BOYLE RC Parish Roscommon; there were none in Mayo

    Patrick 1837  Catherine 1839  Mary 1842  James 1847

There are no marriage records for any of the couples

There is a baptism record for Mary Cullen 1848 Roscommon but it wasn't Boyle RC; same for John Gaffney 1844

rootsireland charges to viewm the full record which will have the parish and MAYBE the parents' names

When searching for your Wynn family you should also consider an alternate spelling of Guihan. I have attached a discussion from about 12 years ago on the Leitrim-Roscommon bulletin board for background.

I searched for civil marriage index records for Patrick Guihan in the late 1860s and found one where the spouse was Margaret Cullen which is close but not Mary.

  • This is my first step back across the ocean.  I do not know what Boyle RC Parish Roscommon is. Could you explain? I've never heard of roots ireland either.  Is this a paid site?

It does sound like John Gaffney and Mary Cullen may be who I am looking for, but not sure what you meant that it isn't Boyle RC.

Is there parishes that might be in both counties?

I'd really appreciate a little help with these first steps into Ireland.

  • The information about the connection to Scotland is very interesting. The story that we were given about the Wynn ancestry is that they originally came from Wales. Is it possible the Wynn's were from other places first before arriving in Ireland? Does anyone know more about that?

Also, when they first arrive in the USA, they are quarrymen. Is there any possibility they were doing the same work in Ireland in County Mayo or Rosscommon?

    Thank you everyone!

I will comment on Question 2. It is possible that your family lived in Wales and Scotland but it will be difficult to confirm.

There are mines in northern Co. Roscommon so if they were from that area possibly they sought the same line of work when they emigrated.

  • I believe question 1 was for me:

Yes www.rootsireland.ie/ is a site on which you need to ourchase credit though you do get 'free pages'

Boyle parish is at the top left or north-east of Roscommon (number 4 on the map)

    http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/MAPS/ros_rcpar.html

'Not from Boyle RC' simply meant she was from a different parish - it would have been nice if she was from there too but I looked it up again and she was from KILRONAN RC (number 33 just above number 4 so looks like they lived near each other.

According to google Boyle was once part of Rockingham Estate county Mayo but Kilronan wasn't
