Hello,
I am trying to find out about my 2nd gr grandfather, James Moran, brn abt 1843, immigrated to US in 1865 according to US 1880 census. He was a bricklayer. He was married to Sarah McHale (brn 1848) but I don't know if they were married in Ireland or the US. My aunts think their Morans are from the Westport area but other than one photograph of James I have no records for my father's side of the family past James.
any help would be appreciated.

Victoria:
If James was from the Westport area, the RC church for the area would be Oughaval. Baptismal records for that church start in 1845 on Roots Ireland, however, according to a resource book I have, the records may go back to 1823.
There is an 1848 baptismal record for a James Moran in Oughaval church but is that too late? There are 18 James Moran records from 1840-1846 on Roots for Co. Mayo.
I also found one Sara McHale baptismal record in 1848 in Mayo.
It would really help if you had the parents names for James and Sarah. Do their death records provide that information?
Late this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to put the RC parish registers online for free searching.
Let me know if you have questions.

Hi Roger,
I thought I had replied to this but perhaps not. I'm afraid I haven't been able to track down death certificates for either James or Sara, but am trying to. The 1848 date might be too late for our James as it seems Sara was a bit younger than he but I have dates and name spellings to be often incorrect on us census records.
thanks for your help, I am looking forward to digging deeper.
