I am researching my Monaghan ancestors. Hugh Monaghan is my 2nd great grandfather whose birth about 1806 in Mayo, Ireland is recorded on the English  1841 UK census. He was  aged 35, a  fruiterer  living in West Pump Alley Malton St Leonards, Yorkshire,  with Charlotte 25, John 7.   I will be visiting  Mayo  20th and 21st  April 2014 and research my Monaghan ancestors.  I don't know which parish  :(

  • Hi Christine

I searched www.rootsireland.ie/ for births/baptisms of Hugh Monaghan in Mayo 1806 + - 5 years but got no matches. I then tried all counties and got 6: 1807 Galway 1804 Dublin 1804 Meath 1803 Meath & 1810 Wicklow.

There are some townlands that were transferred from Galway to Mayo but not til 1898.

The Tithe Applotments 1823-37 & free to search have 31 Monaghans in Mayo (no Hughs though - pity - as the naming patterns were usually repeated)

There are 7 Hugh Monaghans in the Tithes 3 in Monaghan 2 in Longford 1 in Cork & 1 in Meath

In Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 there are 250 Monaghans in Mayo!

There are currently 41 Monaghans in Mayo in the Irish phone book (free online). It's as lot of stamps to send a generic letter to them all but if all else fails maybe one of them will have an answer. (It has worked with others).

  • Col Thank you so much, I have no  knowledge of why Hugh went to England but he was there in 1841 before the famine in Ireland.  Could I assume that he may have gone looking for work.?  I am  travelling from Australia in April next year and will be hiring a barge from Maynooth to Mullingar and back.  My 4th great grandfather  Thomas McCormick was transported as a convict in 1816 from Mullingar,  Westmeath. But there are better records for my convict than for Hugh. After our barge holiday we hope to have two days car rental  to drive to Mayo with the hope that I can find out something about High Monaghan  I know that for 1806 there may be no records  available but at least I can tread on Mayo soil and blow kisses in his memory.  Regards Christine
