Hi,
I am looking for information regarding my great grandparents-- Martin and Mary McGowan. Howley.I know that they were farmers in Cloondolough aka Ballywinagher?sp.My grandmother,Maria( Mary)Howley was one of ten children.I believe that three of the children died in infancy/ childhood Six eventually emigrated to America and the youngest.Margaret ( married John Conlon) ,remained on the farm. There may be family still there
I know that my great grandparents were recorded in the 1911 census both were in their sixties at the timeThey were married in the early 1870's.I don't know anything about their parents or sibs nor where they are buried or their exact birth/ death dates.
I found most of their children in the baptismal records online and was told later that most are recorded in Holy Family Church in Kiltimagh.
My grandmother Maria emigrated to America between 1895 to 1900.She married Frank Robinson from Aghamore in 1902 in Chester. Pennsylvania.
Her sibs who survived and followed later were Ellen ( married Patrick Cannon-- from Co. Mayo.; Theresa-- who died in 1915 in her late twenties; Annie( married Thomas Garvey also fromCo. Mayo); Patrick remained a bachelor and Michael( no info). John, Catherine and another sister ? Name unk. died in Ireland.
My grandmother was born in June 1876 and was the oldest daughter.I was told that the Murtaugh family were cousins as well as Brennan. The Kilgallon family may be related or. We're close friends at that time and possibly the McNichol and Ford- Ward and Ruane families. Some of these names were noted as sponsors for baptisms and am not certain if there is a family connection
Any info at all would be most appreciated. Thanks

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reasonwhy they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given atthe port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g.Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps evenfind out an exact place of origin. Ellis Island:http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp Castlegarden
US National Archives/Immigration info:http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/ The Boston Pilot; From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a?Missing Friends? column with advertisements from people looking for ?lost? friends and relativeswho had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This extraordinary collection of 40,743 recordsis available here as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad thatappeared in the Pilot. http://infowanted.bc.edu/ The next thing you could do is find the counties and places in Ireland your family names are mostprevalent. Look at the website http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and perhapssomething will match some other clue you may have found elsewhere? If nothing turnsup ? it is advisable to try different variations of the spellings of the names. If you have a possiblefirst name you could try the Irish Census 1901, 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ or the landvaluation record called Griffiths Valuationhttp://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

Hello,
I'm replying to your message ten years after you wrote it. Not sure if you will receive this message or not. I hope so!
My name is Thomas Howley. I live in Minnesota (USA). My grandfather was Michael Howley, born in Kiltimagh, Mayo (Cloondolough). I am in the process of researching family history. I know my grandfather had two brothers, Thomas and Martin. Martin must have been your great-grandfather. Their parents were Thomas and Anne (Ward).
I'm wondering if you were able to collect any additional information. I'm wondering if any Howleys are currently living in Cloondolough. Please let me know if you were able to collect any additional information.

A bit more information. Michael Howley, my grandfather, left Ireland and moved to Canada. He married Margaret Gaughan, and together they moved to the United States (Minnesota). Michael lived from 1873-1927. He died in Minneapolis, Minnesota. My dad was born in 1923, so he didn't get to know his father very well. His mother remarried.
