Need help please locating Patrick Foy and Catherine Munnelly from Carrowmore in the Backs/Knockmore parrish? 3 children were born to them in this parish and Patrick and Catherine were married in Claremorris in 1828. Childrens baptisims were in 1836, 1838 and 1842. Cannot find info on parish Backs/Knockmore. Is this now Knock parish?

Any help and direction would be very much appriciated!

  • Backs RC parish is located between the towns of Ballina and Foxford, and just east of Lough Conn. It contained the civil parishes of Ballynahaglish and Kilbelfad. In the 1830s had chapels at Knockmore and Gallows Hill.

See the following links for some details of the two civil parishes Ballynahaglish and Kilbelfad  (Lewis 1837)

There's a map of the various RC parishes in Co. Mayo on the Irish Times / John Grenham website - here

  • yes - the Catholic parish of Backs still exists, they seem to have some details at this link. The two chapels they mention, at Knockmore and Rathduff are at the same locations, or at least very close to, where the chapels were back in the 1830s...

Your Carrowmore in Kilbefad civil parish (there are several places named Carrowmore in Co. Mayo) is close to the chapel at Rathduff in the north of the parish.

(location of chapels in Backs parish - c1840)
