Ulick and Catherine Ford emigrated to America, arriving New York 25 March 1847 aboad the Finland, they had a least 2 adult children with them Mary age and 22 and I think Patrick, he may have been with his wife and son.

Ulick and Catherine are on the 1850 census living with Mary and her Husband John Rock in Dixon, Lee, Illinois, Mary married John Rock  I belive in either Dixon or New York. I have since found out that the Fords came from County Mayo, One other son Richard Ford went to Bradford, Yorkshire and married an Irish girl, Ellen O'Donnell in 1854, why Richard did not go to Illinois with his parents I do not know, it is his line that I descend from. Still trying to find out where in County Mayo they came from.

  • Hi Jo,

From the N Y passenger list it looks like Ulick was born 1807 as he was 40 when they arrived in 1847.

On rootsireland ( apy per view site) I found birth/baptism entries for Patrick 1815, Catherine (Forde)1828 Mary (Forde) 1824 all DUBLIN and Owen 1841 Mayo.

I googled Ulick Ford and there is an entry on Irish Genealogy for the baptism of Ulick Ford on 22nd Nov 1769 in Dublin; parents Richard and Mary so the names seem to have been passed down.

Perhaps if you paid for one of the Dublin birth/baptism records it would give you a parish location that they came from. You could do the same for the Mayo one.

    Best regards

John Rock is believed to be my Great-Great Uncle, one of three brothers who ended up in Dixon. There was also a Dominick Ford born 1845/46 on the Finland and is shown in the same 1850 census for Dixon. I believe Ulick had a brother named Peter who ended up in Hahnaman, Whiteside Co, Illinois which is just down the road from Dixon. Luke Rock, son of John and Mary Ford Rock is shown living with these Fords and is said to be a cousin in the 1880 census for Hahnaman. If the below is correct it narrows down where in Mayo the Fords were from. Written by a reporter in 1908.

His death occurred on Friday, May 17, 1907. Mr. Ford was born at Killala in county Mayo, Ireland, June 22, 1802. He was married to Miss Mary A. Muldoon on Jan. 24, 1834, and came to this country in 1840, locating near Utica, K. Y., where he worked on the Erie canal. Three years later his wife and two children came over and the family then went to Canada and made their home near Smith’s Falls until 1857. They came to Illinois that year and stayed in Dixon for a short time. Mr. Ford then purchased a farm in Hahnaman and engaged in farming. In 1887 he removed to Tampico, where he resided until his wife’s death in 1895, since which time he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Coleman, in Deer Grove. Mr. and Mrs. Ford had nine children, seven of whom are now living..

  • Hi Ed, Thank you for the reply, I was begining to wonder if Peter and Ulick were related, so it looks like Peter went first then Ulick followed, do wonder why my 2x Gt Grandfather didn't go with them? I spoke a couple of years ago to a lady who was about to turn 100, she was a daughter of John Edward Ford who was born in Dixon. She seemed to think they came from Westport

Do you know anything about Mary Ford (1826 - 14 Dec 1895) who married John Rock (1821-1865) ?

But thank you so much for taking the time to reply, think I will have to pay the Lee historical society to look some stuff up in the newspapers for me.
