I'm looking for information on John Devaney from Cloonlavish, Claremorris Mayo (at time of marriage). He married Bridget Beisty. They married in 1870 in Knock RC Parish. Bridget's info indicates she was from Adergoole at time of her marriage. She lived in Ahena Tagheen for a time with her Aunt Catherine Devaney and uncle Payrick Vahey (Knockagraffy). They had 10 children Austin, Patrick Henry, William, Martin, Ellen (my great grandmother) (Buckley), Mary "Marie" (Tanner), Bridget, Thomas, Honoria "Nora" (Gildea), and Catherine (Vahey) (Groghan). Patrick, Martin, Ellen, Mary, Nora all emigrated to the Boston, MA USA area. Catherine lived in Claremorris for a while and moved to England. Austin perished in the Maypole Mining Accident in 1908. As of 1901, Bridget Beisty Devaney was residing in Claremorris upper with her son Martin nd Austin and mother in law Winifred. The family possibly lived in Claremorris Upper prior to the 1901 census. Relatives of Bridget Beisty's include Curry. Relatives also include Flatley, and possibly Hession. I'm stuck in my research and hope to find the names of John Devaney's and Bridget Beisty's parents and siblings...any help would be greatly appreciated. Johns parents are possibly William and Winifred. Bridget's father might be Thomas Beisty. Thank you!!!

Jill:
The 1856 Griffiths valuation head of household listing for Cloonlavis shows two Devaney (Devany) records. I assume the Winifred is Bridget's mother in law similar to the 1901 census record.
Devany John Cloonlavis, Upper Knock Mayo
Devany Winifred Cloonlavis, Upper Knock MayoI did find the 1911 census record in Cloonlavis and John (shown as John W. Devanny) was still alive. He was listed as married and Bridget's name was entered and scratched out. Was she still alive but not living in the house when the census was taken? You will also note that they had the 10 children but only 8 were living in 1911. You mentioned Austin dying in 1908.

By the way, who was the oldest son? Likely John's father had the same name.
Finally, all the records I have seen including Griffiths show Beisty spelled as Beasty.

This is probably the death index record for Winifred. You can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie for a copy of the record. Fill out their form provide the quarter/year of death, registration district (Claremorris) and the volume and page number ( 4 and111) . Cost 4 euros. The record will not show her husbands name since he was deceased.

Hi Roger,
Thank you so much!
Bridget was in Boston, MA, US with her daughter Norah after 1906 and passed away there. I didn't see this on that record before! Thank you! I'm not sure when he died.
The oldest son was William Devaney (married Bridget Harrison then Margaret Roche) and lived in Ballyfarnagh. I've heard but do not know for certain that Bridget died young. Not sure when. There's also a question of weather Bridget and John had a son Thomas. I've found a record of him from the Mayo Research Center. I can't find any records beyond this. I also felt confused by the marriage record from 1870 stating Bridget was from Addergoole. We thought she was from Ahena Tagheen but perhaps lived there briefly with her Aunt Catherine. No other record corresponds time wise. Will I be able to find out names of siblings if I find out the names of his parents?

This death index record could possibly be for your John. You can go to www.familysearch.org and go to search. I entered his name and searched from 1911-1930. This was the best match. You can write to the GRO and follow my instructions in my prior note.

Hello,
You were very helpful last year and I'm hoping you can offer some assistance again. I'm somewhat stuck in my research. I am not able to locate any information about John Devaney or Bridgeat Beisty (Beasty). Their marriage record indicates Johan's father was William and he was from Cloonlavish. Bridget was from Adergoole and her father was Patrick. I'm interested in finding info about their parents and siblings but I cannot locate anything.
Thanks so much!

Thank you Roger!
Very helpful and much appreciated! I found that John's fathers name was William Devaney and his mother's name was winifred. How do I locate his siblings names and maiden name of his mother?
Thanks again,
-
Hello and thank you!
will the document show her maiden name?

Jill:
I just checked the Roots Ireland indexes and could not locate a John Devaney baptismal record from 1834-1844 with a father named William. The records for Claremorris start around 1837 but I know from experience that there are gaps in the records.
Batpsimal records usually show the maiden name of the mother.
Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to place the RC parish registers online for free searching. I would look at the Claremorris (Kilcolman) records at that time.
