My Great Grandparents - Patrick Duffy and Bridget Sheil married 1857 in Kilmovee - listed as 3rd cousins. They lived at Cloonierin - Patrick born 1831, son of Martin of Carrownlacka. Bridget born 1839, likely daughter of Michael of ??
Patrick Duffy was first cousin to Michael Sheil of Carrownlacka born 1839 and son of Peter Sheil and Mary Duffy. Mary Duffy was the sister of Martin Duffy of Carrownlacka. Patrick Duffy had a brother James, born 1826 married to a cousin Bridget Duffy and they lived at Cloonierin; a sister Catherine Duffy born 1824 who married her cousin John Duffy (brother of Bridget) and they also lived at Cloonierin.
I believe that Bridget Sheil's parents may have been both Sheil but I can't link any siblings to Bridget except possibly Catherine Sheil married to Philip Merriman of Carrownlacka. Their daughter Anne was my grandfather Peter's godmother.
Would like to hear from anyone who might know the history and family lines of Sheil families going back to the early 1800 or late 1700 era to assist me in linking the right families together.

I haven't checked in for quite a while myself. I haven't had any updates in years. I have had an Ancestry account for years and found Kilmovee cousins and yet no further info on my Sheil ancestors. I thought DNA Matching might assist but so far no luck. Back in 1999, I met some of my father's 1st cousins and asked if they knew about their grandmother's family. They believed that they had left the parish and gone to England and Pennsylvania. I did connect with some Sheil cousins in England but they were in England as a family more recently than Bridget's siblings or ancestors would have been. I found some of the Pennsylvania Sheils from Kilmovee but not the direct link to Bridget, although surely cousins nonetheless.

Hello Michael,
I just came across you message and had to answer.
My ancestors Shiel/Sheil came from culmore and are probably connected to your family. My 3x great grandad is Michael Shiel/Sheil approx. born before 1830 and married Bridget Kennedy they lived in Meelick and had at least 10 children. I do not have any info on his possible siblings or parents, but some of their descendants moved to US including Pennsylvania.
Some of my family still live in county mayo, including my dad who just returned to meelick/Swinford after more than 25 years.
Maybe we could help each other fill in the missing information. And reconnect the family.
