I am searching for family descended from John and Mary Moran who lived in Coolnaha in 1851 but moved with most of their family to the Manchester area, then to Halifax, Yorks around 1862. In 1871 John was a widower and living with him were Michael, Patrick, James, John, Thomas and Margaret ( my gt grandmother), the only one born in the UK. James and Patrick returned to Coolnaha where they both lived around 1920. I would really like to know what happened to James, Mary and Bridget as I have no knowledge of them at all.

I know that my great aunt Mary Alice Mulholland ( born Harrington) came to visit her cousins in Co Mayo in the early 1970's so it would be wonderful if I could find living relatives.

  • Hi

Noted your email. I hope that I can help in some way.

Please feel free to get back to me on issues that I outlined below.

    (1) Firstly, I noted that John and Mary Moran came from Coolnaha to England in the 1860s. I checked Land records for the 1850s and noted that a John Moran was a tenant farmer in Annagh which is a neighbouring village to Coolnaha. Indeed Annagh was defined as a village in the Coolnaha Electoral division. It is possibly the same John Moran. (Griifiths Valuations 1850s)

    (2) I noted the children that you outlined were living in Halifax in 1871 with their widower father, John Moran. I think that I noted the same Census record although I could not see a son named John. I did note a daughter Margaret, aged 6, born in Lancashire. You also mentioned Mary and Bridget which I presume were other children of John and Mary.

    (3) Noting the address in Annagh/Coolnaha, the respective parish records for Aghamore are only recorded from 1864. No baptismal records for the children are likely in this scenario.

    (4) The area that may give the best results are the marriage records of the children of John and Mary Moran. You advised that James and Patrick returned back to Ireland. Is it possible that there were other siblings that returned to Ireland and possibly other siblings that you have not noted? Curiously, in the 1901 census records, there are a number of Moran families in Annagh/Coolnaha. I could not locate marriages for Mary and Bridget Moran to husbands outlined in Mayo.

    (5) Can you advise if your great aunt visited the Ballyhaunis area in the 1970s? Were connections still available in Coolnaha or Kilmovee? Jane, names may assist. The Moran name is still evident in the Ballyhaunis area today while noting that there also a number of Regan families in Kilmovee area also.

Jane, if you can add any other detail, I may be able to assist further.

  • Hi,

Many thanks for your help. I've made some progress which may be useful over the past year to add more details. It also clarifies the census details .

James born about 1855 m Mary Cribben of Lecarrow  12/2/1873 T Aghamore. They had Mary b 26/12/1873 bap Aghamore 21/1/1874. Also Margaret 23/3/1876 and Catherine 19/1/1879. 1911 census confirms 3 children all living but I dont know where they were 1901 or 1911. A possible wedding and a possible entry as dressmakers for 2 sisters but age of Mary incorrect 1901 in Westport. James and Mary have niece Maggie living with them at 4 Coolnaha S in 1901 and 12 1911 . Maggie is 4 th daughter of Patrick 1901 2 Coolnaha S and 1911 11 so basically next door. As their girls had left home they presumably had more space !

Patrick m Mary Brennan of Carrowneden 11/12/1888 d 7/3/1896. They had 4 children Catherine b 18/12/1888 bap 26/12/1888 Aghamore then John 5/4/1890, then Mary Anne b 21/1/1893 bap 22/1/1893 then Margaret b 25/1/1895 bap Aghamore 1/2/1895 . After his wife's death Patrick m Margaret Lynch of Errit Carrowbehy Co Roscommon 10/12/1898 Ballaghadreen and they had Patrick Martin b 20/10/1900 bap Aghamore 27/10/1900 and Winifred b about 1902.

My gt aunt used to visit her female cousins and as she had 7 above, at least 2 were clearly living in the area in the late 1960's/ early 1970's.

Both Patrick and James lived to claim their pensions around 1920 and from the indications on the pension doc it looks like Mary and Bridget did too. I am not sure now about the Regan/ Creighton link to these sisters as I can't find conclusive proof.

Anyway I'm now certain about the above names and dates so any further help would be much appreciated . I really would love to find living relatives!

    Many thanks!

  • Hello

This is my first message back to those looking for relatives of John and Mary Moran. I've read through these posts with some delight to know some of my families history.  My father, John Patrick Moran, passed away in 1971. He was born in Sacramento California and lived in San Jose, Ca   Hi father was John Thomas Moran b 5/4/1890, son of Patrick and Mary Moran. His sister Catherine, or Kate as she went by and he travelled to New York sometime between 1900 and  1911   Winifred and Mary also camebutnot sure if it was the same trip.  Kate married John Bastida and they lived for a long time in San Francisco. My grandfather John Thomas married Vera Weller Waterland and they had one son - my father. My father and my mother Santa had seven children together- five boys and two girls - Jack, Dennis, Sallie, Margery, Robert, William and James. I do have other dates and info but I was really imterested in knowing my Irish family history and someday visiting Ireland - brother Dennis has visited butknew no history

Grandfather John Thomas aka Jack passed in 1958. It was insightful to learn the and his family moved to Halifax - earlier reported as England so I assume it is this Halifax. And his mother Mary died and ggf Patrick remarried to Margaret. I do have digital records of the census from 1900 and 1911 with some age discrepancies of the parents between this time.  And noted the other family members living at number 4, two doors down from where they lived at number 2 in south Coolnaha.

Please let me know any more information.

    Most appreciative

    Margery Moran

Hi Margery I’m in shock! It’s so long since I wrote this I gave up hope finding any relatives! My husband and I even went to Coolnaha last summer but couldn’t find out any more and now you come up with answers. I really would love to find out more and I will help you with the English side. Margaret b Manchester about 1864 was my great grandmother and she was sister of Patrick who I think was your great grandfather!! My email is jane.giorgi@btinternet.com so please please get in touch. I don’t have many photos which is sad but hope you have more. How very strange that my great aunt Mary Alice Harrington/Mulholland who was Margaret’s daughter emigrated to New York but returned to Halifax in about 1968 as a widow. She didn’t have children sadly but used to go to Mayo every summer to see her female cousins.  I’ve no idea who they were but it was proof that family still lived in Coolnaha then. I can’t wait to add your information on my Ancestry family tree!! So excited and awaiting an email from you. Jane

  • Hello, Jane. The Harrington surname caught my attention. Was Harrington the surname of your great-grandfather? Was he from Kilmovee? My GGM was Catherine Harrington.

  • Hi Maggie sorry to disappoint you but the Harrington’s came from Cork City where the name is as popular as Moran is in Co Mayo! Good luck in your search! The discussion above just shows how this site can connect people. I literally had no living Moran family I knew of and now have 7 third cousins. However there’s a whole branch of 3 sisters Mary born 1873 Margaret born 1876 and Catherine born 1879 whose parents are James Moran and Mary Cribben

Who I would love to connect with but I don’t know who they married

  • Harrington is quite a popular name in Co. Mayo

I live on the Sligo/Mayo border and from Charlestown and down through Kilkelly there are lots of Harringtons
