Hello

I am looking for information on my great grand parents Catherine Durkin and Micheal Farrell, they married in Kilmovee Roman Catholic  church January 27 1909. Micheal was a farmer and so was Catherine's father , also called Micheal. They had a lot of children. I think Catherine would have been born around 1879-1881 as census has stated both years, Micheal Farrell was born in 1864 and died in 1941. I would like to find some information on the Durkins as I am finding them hard to locate. I know Micheal Farrell's parents were Dominic and Mary Farrell (formally Tansy) but I only have Catherine's father's name Micheal Durkin born about 1837 and I know that he was a farmer like Micheal Farrell. I would really appreciate it if anyone could pint me in the right direction for information on the Durkin family from Kilmovee. I thank you kindly in advance.  Louise :)

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I  located a civil birth record and baptismal record in 1878 but I'm not sure for the family lived near Swinford. There is also a Catherine Durkan born in 1888 around Kilmovee. See below. Let me know if you think the 1888 record is more likely and I can do more searching.

thank you I have no idea where they lived before their marriage but I do know that after they were married they lived in Shegoree/a, which I think comes under Boyle rural district. I know my grandmother their daughter Winifred was born in Boyle under the address of Shegoree. I am not sure how close these districts are to each other, as I have yet to visit Ireland.

I'm confused. Boyle parish is a good distance to the northeast of Kilmovee. Sheegory townland is in Boyle civil parish and I checked the 1911 census and there was a Michael Farrell family with a wife Catherine plus children. This Catherine was born in Co. Roscommon according to the census record and the marriage occurred in the late 1890s not 1909.This may be a different couple.

I also could not find a 1909 civil marriage record for a Michael Farrell and Catherine Durkan.

I did locate the 1912 civil birth record for a Winifred Farrell to parents Michael and Catherine in Sheegory and likely this was the family shown in the 1911 census. You will have to sign-in to see the record.

  • I found the census record for the marraige on another site so assumed it would be them as it is Durkin and Farrell.  have not found one any earier as he was married to someone else prior to 1909 he was married to Anne Ganley and they had children together before Anne died in 1909 then he married Catherine and had more children. My great uncle Pat told me his mother Catherine was from Kilmovee but I have no idea where that is. I think it can get really confusing trying to search and not knowing whether you ahve the right people. I have my Nan's birth certificate and some kind distant relative shared a photo of my nan's grandparents online which added up to my search regarding Micheal Farrell being the right oen but Catherine Durkin is becoming really hard to pin down I found Anne Ganley/Ganly not sure how important spelling would be on surnames as Tansey/tansy and Durkin/Durkan are all listed but Catherine is really hard to find as one census lists her as being born in 1881 another in 1879 and both are listed with all the right children on. I really appreciate your help and thankyou kindly for helping me search. It does feel sometimes like a maze of names and I am afraid to buy anythign without pin pointing the right Catherine.

  • thank you

the record there for 1911 is correct one that is them as the older children are from his previous marriage and then they stated having their own children.

  • Catherine:

Kilmovee is a small village and civil parish plus RC parish in Mayo not far from the Roscommon border. I would estimate that Kilmovee is about 20 miles from Boyle.

Roots Ireland has Kilmovee church records from 1854-1900. I did a search for a Catherine Durkan with father Michael and the only record that came up is the 1888 record I provided earlier. Likely that is not the correct record since she was shown as 30 in 1911.

  • Hi Louise,
I recently began researching my Durkin family ancestors who originated from Ranagissaun townland in Kilmovee civil/RC parish in  Co. Mayo and have come across your Catherine Durkan, daughter of Michael Durcan and Catherine MacDonagh. She is not part of my family tree (there were 3 or 4 Durkan families in Ranagissaun from 1850-1901!) but, if you are still searching for information, then I would be delighted to send you details.
    Kind regards,
    John Durkin
