Hello, I'm searching for the places my ancestors left during the great hunger. With some help from cousins on 23&me I come to think this is one area I need to search. I'm looking for my 3x great grandparents Martin Swift (I've been told it could have been changed from Foody or Forde) born abt 1815 and Mary Gilvary born about 1821. They would have been Catholic and had two sons who they took with them to Toxteth Liverpool England probably around 1845/6. The sons were Patrick born abt 1840 and Thomas born about 1845. My 2x great grandmother and more of her siblings were born in Liverpool. Thanks for any help! -Becky

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I will alert our parish liaison for Kilmoremoy parish about your message. He is also very knowledgeable with DNA testing.

Hello Becky!
My family are FORD+MEARS/MEER from Ballina, married 1833 at St. Muredach's. They emigrated to Illinois USA via Quebec Canada abt 1834-35. I do not recognize the name SWIFT, but that doesn't mean it's not there. I have dna tests on file at FTDNA, at dna.Ancestry, and 23&Me but do not post a family tree there.
From any testing service you can upload your raw dna to a site called GedMatch (free!) to find matches from all over, plus they will tell you how many gen. back to your ICW (ancestor in common with someone) which is a great tool. I would love to talk with you more about this but I'm not sure what is the best way to exchange contact info.
There is also a Co Mayo Ancestry group on FaceBook where people help one another a lot. Do you have a family tree anywhere? I have a very large tree/database at Ancestry.com which I am happy to share. I have been discovering many cousins thru a combination of family trees, dna, and records.
Libbet in Michigan if you are on FB maybe you can search for my name and find me that way, & send a message?

Hi Becky,
I can also help out. I have some ancestros from Kilmoremoy, and have done testing at Ancestry.com, 23andme and FamilyTreeDNA. One suggestion is for you to look at www.gedmatch.com - they allow you to upload your DNA and compare against other testers from other companies.
There were quite a few Mayo people that went to Toxteth Liverpool during the famine from Killala & Ballina areas.
Here's a post about Gilvary's in Killala, which is near Ballina: http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/gilvarry/2/
And there is a Gilvarry's pub in Killala, see: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gilvarrys-Pub/270182303082911
I found a Michael Gilvary on the Irish tithes from about 1832 in Kilmoremoy Parish, could be Mary's father. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004625684/00…
There's a John Swift, also in Kilmoremoy on the tithes here: http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004625684/00…
Could you list all of their children and dates of birth?

Wow, hello everyone! Roger, thanks! I look forward to seeing if anything turns up! Paulina and John, my email is beckyalong@gmail.com and if you email me I can give you my gedmatch kit # because I'm on there already. I'm not great at using that site though, still new to the DNA stuff. I'm also beginning to wonder if my Flynn ancestors were also from this area. In Toxteth park the Swifts and Flynn's were neighbors and friends and my 2x great grandfather Michael Flynn married my 2x great grandmother Mary Swift. I always believed the Flynn's were from cork but I think now that was misinformation. Michael's parents were James Flynn b. 1815 and Alice b. 1819. John, I'll get back with all that dates of the children of Martin Swift and Mary Gilvary though only Patrick and Thomas were born in Ireland. The rest were born in Toxteth, Liverpool. Thank!

Hi Becky,
I'll drop you a note. Here's a very good video that can help you use DNA in your research:

When a do a search for matches w ancestral name GILVARY at dna.Ancestry, I find a Catherine GILVARY w daughter Winifred PRENDERGAST.(both b Ballina). Winifred married Michael Joseph DOHERTY. They do not give dates. I believe some PRENDERGASTs are also MANLEY/MUNNELLY in Belmullet area. (I am also MUNNELLY so that may be where my match comes from.)
The family also connects to LYNCH. These may not mean anything at all in your family, but in mine there were some definite marriage patterns between families and perhaps your GILVERY/GILVARY also married some of these.

Thanks, nothing stands out to much about that except that in Liverpool on one census record (1851) my Swift ancestors have visitors staying with them. Two of the three visitors are named Daughtery (maybe same name different spelling?). I've often wondered if they were related. The other person was an Edgan.
Did you get my message of Facebook? Check your "other" folder. I can share my gedmatch with you there.

There was a James SWIFT who married Mary MANLEY or MUNNELLY,; her family were part of a group from Tullysleva, Co Mayo. I think she was b 1843. She had brothers Bryan (1823-); Patrick (1841-); John (1846-); Martin F (1852-1927); sister Anne (1849-); Catherine (1858-).
Martin went to Chicago, Cook, IL, USA, where he died 1927' had son James Francis MANLEY (1887-1962). I need to fix something in my tree as I may have combined 2 generations both w father named Bryan Brian, but this may help you
Parents of this group were Bryan (Brian) MUNNELLY (1806-1890)+Catherine Cate RUTLEDGE (1800-). One way to see if this is your group is to do a surname search in your autosomal test matches for the surname RUTLEDGE and see what comes up. You can do that at FTDNA.com and at dna.Ancestry. GedMatch will tell you when you have a match how many gen. back to your ancestor in common, but does not give you their family tree info, it is up to you to contact your matches at abt the right gen. and contact them yourself, a great tool.
DAUGHERTY/DOHERTY etc. is an ancient clan that includes MUNNELLY off--shoot, likely in Donegal. Dna is supporting this understanding, so maybe yours stayed close! or knew they were kin.

Thanks, I just came back to this to check Rutledge as you suggested but no luck. I did find a Pendergast via gedmatch and on a family living near mine in Rhode Island. If anyone has new info please let me know. Still searching.
