Hello, I’m hoping to confirm some new leads I have from a DNA ancestor about the location for my Swift/Foody and Gilvary ancestors. My DNA cousin was given records for her ancestor John Swift b 15 June, 1829 in Ballina and that his parents were Martin Swift amd Catherine Burke. I believe my 3x great grandfather Martin Swift/Foody b. About 1815 May have been an older brother to her John and share the same parents, or at least the same father. I’d like to try and confirm this. My 3x great grandfather Martin was married to Mary Gilvary (various spellings) b. About 1819/20. The couple had two children born in Ireland that I know of; Patrick b. About 1840 and Thomas b. About 1845. Sometime between the birth of Thomas and 1851 they left or were evicted and traveled to England landing in Toxteth Park, Liverpool appearing on the 1851 census of England. I’ve heard that many from the area of Ballina joined that community of Irish refugees in Toxteth? Thank you for any help you can offer.  -Becky

  • Hi Becky,

This would have been the record of the John Swift baptism from www.rootsireland.ie/:

    Date of Baptism:16-Jun-1829Address:Garden StParish/District:KILMOREMOY/BALLINAGender:MaleCountyMAYO

I couldn't find the parents' marriage record.

The only siblings for John are:

I wonder if the unknown twin could be Martin? There are no death/burial records before 1858 on roots so I couldn't find if the tin survived.

There are no Martin Foody baptisms before 1846

I did find a marriage record of Martin & Cath but it has very little info!!

    Date of Marriage:21-Aug-1828
    Parish / District:KILMOREMOY
    County:MAYO
    Husband
    WifeName:MartinSwift
    CathBourkeAddress:Kilmoremoy
    KilmoremoyDenomination:Church Of Ireland
    Church Of Ireland

Looks like they were both from Kilmoremoy

The Irish Censuses are available free online (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/). The earliest is 1821 but there are no Swifts or Foodys in Mayo!

The Tithe Applotments - also free at  http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/ - have 17 Swifts in Mayo 1827 - 34 but no Martins.

  • Sorry, I’m just seeing your reply. Thank you for checking. The twin date is too late for the Martin in my tree. He had his first known son around 1840. Did you check for Gilvary at all? Thanks so much for your work, I really appreciate it.

  • Oh, and that marriage being in 1828 does rule out my Martin as another child unless it was a second marriage. Perhaps we go back another generation with the DNA then.

  • Tried to find marriage of Swift & Foody to Gilvary but no luck.

No luck with Mary Gilvary 1820 + - 10 years in any county I'm afraid
