I've been on many genealogy sites for each county in Ireland as well as Catholic Parish records and can't find enough info on my great-grandparents.  My GGM Mary (Ann/e) Carabine was apparently born around 1863 in Kilmoremoy/Balllina. She was Roman Catholic and may have been baptised at St. Muredach's (sp) Cathedral.  She married Andrew Reilly of Cavan County.  Some records show her father as Denis Carabine. Her mother may have been Bridget Caden, but not sure. Mary and Andrew emigrated to the Pennsylvania in the US before the Civil War.  (Side note many from the NE quarter of Mayo went to Luzerne County in PA to work in the coal mines.)

If you have any leads for Carabines (or Reillys) please let me know.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Below is a transcript of the 1863 baptismal record for Mary and her father was Denis and her mother was Bridget Caden. Mary also had a brother Thomas born in 1859.

The Civil War ended in 1865 so it is unlikely that Mary and Andrew emigrated before the Civil War. I did not find a marriage index record for Mary and Andrew so I'm wondering if they were married in the USA.

  • Thanks so much for the post and information!  You are correct - I was mixing up my Irish relatives and Andrew Reilly could not have served in the US Civil War.  Andrew and Mary were actually married in Scotland before they emigrated to the US.

The issue for me is taking this the next step backwards in finding Andrew and Mary's parents.  I see a record for Denis Carabine baptised in the Burriscarra Roman Catholic Parish in 1845.  His father was James Carabine and Mother Catherine Carabine.  But how do I know if this is really my relative?  And how can I find records for James and Catherine?  James' death record shows him passiing in 1861 in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

As for Andrew Reilly it looks like his father may have been Andrew Reilly Sr. married to Bridget Smith.  But I can't be sure yet.  Finding Reillys in Cavan County is like finding a needle in the hay stack!

  • Cailin:

I don't think the 1845 record is for your ancestor because Burriscarra parish is way down in south Mayo a long way from Ballina.I think your Denis was baptized in a church that no longer has records for that time period.

I searched on Roots Ireland for a Bridget Caden baptismal record in Mayo from 1825-1845 and found four possible records. One of the records (see below) was in Kilmoremoy church. She would have been 36 when she had Mary. Possibly this is the record for her mother. Here is the link to the parish register for Kilmoremoy. You may want to review the register forpossible relations.

  • Roger,

I appreciate this lead!  Coincidentally, I was also looking at Parish locations the night before you sent this, but I don't have a feel for how much people traveled in those times.  I was wondering how Mary (from Mayo) met Andrew from Cavan.  I will investigate this possible link to Bridget further. Thank you.

  • June 4 2017 Hello Caitlin and Roger.  I am a Carabine descendant from Mary Carabine who married Patrick McGowan.  Their son Patrick migrated to England and then to the United States. He married in England to Mary Ann Doyle (btz Miriam)/. I recently did a DNA test at Ancestry.com and had a match to this Carabine/Riley tree. The match is to the 4th to 8th degree. This degree of consanguinity means that the gg or the ggg grandparents are the common root in our tree. I have been unable to ascertain the parentage of my gg grandmother but she is definitely a sibling of Martin Carabine who married Bridget McDonnell, James who married Catherine O'Hara, Denis who married Anne Durkan and Ellen who married William Durkan. According to trees at Ancestry.com. The parents of your ancestor are as follows:  Mary Ann m AH Rielly,> Denis m Bridget Caden (Carden)  (whos parents seem to be  John Carden and Mary Farrell) > James m Catherine O'Hara.  Please contact me at elizam55@att.net  regarding additional information.  All best, Libby

  • I think one of my ancestors could have been Bridget Camden from that area of Mayo although she was married to Patrick Cain. I will do more digging! Judith

  • Libby, thanks for the information!  I haven’t had time to continue my search.  So are you saying your Mary and her sibling Denis are a shared ancestor? Do you think my Denis married to Bridget Ca(r)den is in correct in my tree? It’s so challenging for me to keep the names and connect ions straight!

  • This side note caught my eye: (Side note many from the NE quarter of Mayo went to Luzerne County in PA to work in the coal mines.). My family also came from this area just outside Ballina.  My ggm Mary Conmy (Thomas Conmy and Bridget Howley) of Cloonislaun married Martin Conmy (Michael Conmy and Mary Munns) of Culleens, Co Sligo and they ended up in Lackawanna Co PA with Martin working in Scranton coal mines. Do you know where people from this area would have departed? And would they have gone to NYC, Philadelphia, or into Canada? You can see I have not been able to find immigration details for them.

    Thanks for any help.

If you contact me via my email, I will send you a report or gedcom file that has information on the Reilly family. RE: My last post on Carabine..  YES!  DnA results for me show 4th degree relation or greater in all of the lines that I mentioned.  The question is, who were the parents for all of those lines?  The second question is, What HAPPENED to my gg grandparents?  I only find a birth record for my great grandfather and references that inferr they were there through 1869 with the marriage of one Hugh McGowan to one Sibby McDonnell!  Parents of Hugh was someone named Hugh McGowan and Sibby/Sabina parent was Pat possibly married to Mary Jordan.  So, repeating, I am looking for parents of Patrick Mc Gowan married Mary Carabine before Feb 1849 and also the parents of this Mary Carabine who appears to be sister to Denis married nne Durkan, Nelly married Wm Durkan (not sibling of Anne and Godfather of Patrick), Catherine (Godmother of Patrick) and Martin who married Bridget McDonnell (Pat and Mary godparents of their children).
