Hi,
My late grandfather was Mark Reilly (2nd April 1857 to 31st July 1926). His parents were Philip Reilly (1820/30 to 28th July 1888) married to Mary Gauchan born I believe in Ballina, Co Mayo (1830's to 14th February 1903). Mary's parents were Michael Gauchan and Bridget Haran. Any information on my family would be most appreciated. John.

John:
The subscription site Roots Ireland has a February 21 1835 marriage between Michael Gaughan and Bridget Haran in Kilmoremoy/Ballina RC church. No townland was listed for Michael but Bridget was from Behy townland which was in Co. Sligo at that time. I looked for baptismal records for children of the couple and the only records were about twenty years later so I'm not sure whether these records were for a different couple on the 1835 Gaughan/Haran couple. The records provided by Roots Ireland were Anne born August 14 1853 and baptized August 19 1853 in Kilmoremoy/Ballina, Thomas born November 12 1856 and baptized November 16 1856 in Kilmoremoy/Ballina and Ellen born May 17 1859 and baptized May 22 1859 also in Kilmoremoy/Ballina. The residence shown for all three records was Behy.
Does this information match what you know about the family?
Also I went back to the Kilmoremoy/Ballina parish register on the NLI site https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0753 and there is a gap in baptismal records from October 1836-May 1849 which explains not finding Mary's record and the records for other siblings.

Hi Roger,
I very much appreciate your reply, many thanks.
The info., regarding the marriage between Michael Gauchan and Bridget Haran seems to tie up well with my information. However I have doubts about the childrens names.
Just for info, Mary Gauchan (my great grandmother) died in Dumbarton, Scotland on 14th February 1903 and was buried from St. Patrick's RC Church, Dumbarton. She was pre-deceased by my great grandfather Philip Reilly who died 28th July 1888 and was also buried from St. Patrick's, Dumbarton.
If any other info., re descendants of Michael Gauchan and Bridget Haran (Ballina) comes to light I would be delighted to here about it.
Kind regards,
John Dougan.

John:
The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilmoremoy civil parish shows a number of Gaughans including a Michael Gaughan at Lower Piper Hill. Might be your ancestor.
Back in the 19th century, It would not be unusual for a lady who married in 1835 to have a child in 1859.
I located a "possible" death record for Bridget Gaughan on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie
