Thomas Ruddy and family lived on Mill St in Ballina and ran the corn mill there.  HIs wife was Mary Melvin and children were John, Bridget (Dillon), Patrick, Thomas, Martin, Anne and Margaret (Walshe).  He died in 1863 and son-in- law Thomas Dillon took over the mill.  I am looking for connections to Thomas Ruddy's siblings or parents.  It is possible he was born in or near Bunree, Quignashee or in Foxford.  And very possible that he was an Uncle to or a cousin of Hugh Ruddy who ran the flour mill next to Murphy's mill on the east side of the Moy River in Ballina.  All of his children emmigrated to Chicago.

  • In my tree, I have a Patrick RUDDY (1830-) who m Catherine HARKINS (1848-).  Their dau Mary Ann RUDDY (1862-1954) m Joseph T THORNTON (1874-1930).  Their dau Marjorie m Peter J MANLEY (also MUNNELLY). in PA, USA.  I am related to this branch of the MANLEY/MUNNELLYs. They came from Ballina, Mayo.  

    Joseph THORNTON's father wes Hall THORNTON (1838-1913); mother Barbara ALLISON.  Hall THORNTON's parents were John THORNTON (1791-)+Margery HALL  (1803-) in Northumberland England.  That line goes bact to Robert b 1715.

    Most of my Irish kin emigrated to the Chicago area, but I have not traced the RUDDYs there; and don't know where the ones in PA were from but the MANLEY/MUNNELLYs they married were definitely from Ballina.  The HALLs may have been from England or Scotland.

    Hi,

    Attached is the Griffiths Valuation page for your Thomas Ruddy. I also found an Andrew Ruddy in Kilmoremoy Parish, Sligo.  He may be a relative of your Thomas.

    You might like to search on http://irishgenealogy.ie/ for all of the Ruddy's in the Civil Registrations for Ballina 

    I saw this 1901 report for Thomas Ruddy, living in Ballyholan, which is the townlad that Andrew Ruddy lived in at the time of Griffiths Valuation

  • HI Cathy! My 2 times great grandfather was Bryan Bernard Ruddy. He was born in 1833. He emigrated to the US and I believe stopped and visited the Ruddy's in PA and then settled in Central IL. His death certificate shows his father as Michael Ruddy and mother as Ellen Lavelle. The reason I think he went through PA is because of a DNA match to someone from the PA Ruddy family and Bryan's wife. I think the PA Ruddy's might be cousins are even a brother to Bryan. Plus there was a Hugh Ruddy and his son's that lived in the same small farm area as Bryan in Central IL and I believe he is an Uncle. In some of my research, I have found the Chicago Ruddy's to be cousins.
