My grandfather was Martin Quinn. He was born in Derryribbeen, Kilmeena Parish in 1859 to Michael Quinn (of Carha, Islandeady Parish, Mayo) and Mary Cormac (of Cummer, Islandeady Parish, Mayo). Michael and Mary were married in 1855 at the Catholic Church in Islandeady. My grandfather's siblings were: John, Bridget, Patrick, Michael Jr., Margaret, Mary and Julia. The oldest children: John, Bridget and Patrick came to Chicago, Illinois, USA around 1880.  Their mother, Mary, died in Ireland between October 1875 (the birth of her last child) and May of 1884 (when the family emigrated). Michael Sr. and the five younger children immigrated to the United Stated in May of 1884 through the port of Boston Massachusetts. From there they traveled to Chicago where, with the exception of Julia, they all spent the remainder of their lives. Julia married and moved to Cripple Creek Colorado and then to Phillipsburg, Kansas where she died in 1915. Michael Sr. had a brother Jack from Carha and a sister Margaret who also lived in Derryribbeen and was married to John Browne. About the same time Michael and his children left for the United States, Margaret and John Brown left for England. If anyone has any further information on this family I would be grateful for reply. I would be most happy to share the information that I have collected on this family.

  • Peggy:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

This is very little help but I searched for a civil death index record for Mary Quinn in the Westport registration district and there were no records between 1875 and 1884 for a Mary Quinn who would have been around 50 or so.

Also, according to my reference book, Derryribbeen townland is in Kilmaclasser civil parish which is between Islandeady and Kilmeena. No need to repost.

  • Hi Peggy, I was wondering if any men in your grandfather's line have tested their y dna? if not are there any men that are any men in your grandfather's direct male line alive that are interetsed in testing y dna? If they have tested do you know their haplogroup? We beleive that there is a chance we come from a Quinn family in Mayo.
