My maternal great grandfather was named Patrick Moran. He immigrated to Chicago from Roscahill, Kilmeena but his name is so common, I'm having an impossible time narrowing down my search to determine any additional information on him from his time in Ireland. The best birth date I have been able to find for him is 2 MAY 1875. The US Social Security records, Chicago Tribune, and my mother confirm a date of death of 6 FEB 1947. I found the Griffith's Index information (attached) that appears to match his Obituary from the Chicago Tribune from 1947. I think his father's name was John and his mother was likely Ellen Browne but I haven't been able to confirm that information. There is another Browne by the name of John on the Griffiths page that I think could be a relation of his mother. I'm new to researching in Ireland and will take any help you can give to confirm birth dates, parents' names, etc. If you have any tips on trying to narrow down the results of such a common name, I would appreciate it as well.

1901 and 1911 census records for the family. Ellen had 7 children (looks like 8 was written first and changed to 7) and six were living in 1911. Patrick emigrated between March 31, 1901 and March 31, 1911.

Looks like John and Ellen may have had an earlier son in 1866 named Patrick who likely died young. See transcription of civil record of birth.
Name:Patrick MoranDate of Birth:14-Nov-1866
Registration Date:1-Jan-0Address:Roschahill, KilmeenaParish/District:Westport districtGender:MaleCountyCo. Mayo
Denomination:Civil Parish
Father:John MoranMother:Ellen BrowneSo far, I have not been able to find the marriage record which likely occurred in 1865 based on the annotation 45 years married on the 1911 census.
I did find civil birth records for six other children so eight children was correct. One of the six must have also died young.

Roger,
This is great! Thank you so much for taking the time to find it. I know Patrick married my grandmother in Chicago in 1906, so that narrows down my search for his immigration record even further. Thanks again.

Hi Pete,
I hope you can receive this a year later. I could be a relation. I am a descendant of the O'Malleys of Roscahill. When she was 19 in 1921 my great aunt Delia O'Malley from Roscahill traveled to Chicago to stay with her Moran cousins. They lived by Wrigley field. I'm not sure how they are related though but they lived in the same house near Wrigley field that her Keane cousins lived. If this rings a bell let me know and I'm happy to compare notes.
Cheers
