My Paternal Grandmother Mary Gibbons was born in Rossmindle Kilmeena, parents: Sarah Cannon, (born possibly in village of Balmoor Kilmeena) and Patrick Gibbons (born possibly in Old Walls/Money) married aprox 1871.  Sarah continued to live in Rossmindle until her death on 16/2/1939 possibly around 80yrs old.  Her funeral mass was said by Rev Fr. Philibin C.C., B.A. with Rev Fr. Walsh as deacon and Rev Fr.  Eaton, P. P. master of ceremonies.  My Grandmother Mary attended the funeral along with some of her siblings.  Patrick Gibbons died of a heart attack in the field coming home for the tea, possibly 1894/95.  There is a headstone somewhere with their names ages and dates of death.  Mary Gibbons emigrated to the U.S. in 1898 to Chicago IL.  The children of Sarah & Patrick Gibbons would have been Baptized possibly at St. Brendans Church in Kilmeena.  The children were: John, Mike, Mary, Patrick, Sara, Breede, Edward, Tom, Annie.  Their neighbors & oft times sponsers were McHales (Pat). Sally King was another name I was given but do not know who she was or how she was involved.  In 1991 I met a woman Breege Keane who was a cousin, her mother & my Grandmother were sisters, Breege was living in Castlbar at the time. Breege took me to my Grandmothers home which was by an inlet of water off the ocean, A doctor had bought the property to build a house on, I was told.  They were farmers but the family eventually had a store in Wesport called Gibbons next door to a store with the name Murray's.  I was there in the mid 90's or so & was told by the Chemist that it was in the building next door to him. Which was by a yellow Hotel I think across from the bridge with the water going under. I had a photograph of the business with Gibbons name on it & Murray next door but it was lost in storage when I was living in Ireland.  When I visited and spoke with the Chemist, I took another photo of the spot he told me it was at.  Tommy Joe Gibbons was my cousin, he emigrated to the US & lived in New Jersey, he died here in 1997/98/99 or so.  But he regularly returned to Ireland and had many friends there, he may have also owned some land there.  He was the son of John Gibbons.  I am writing this in hopes of finding more information and someone who might know exactly where the home was and where their graves are located.   Thank you.

  • Hi Joanna,

I have a cd Irish Memorial Inscriptions Vol 1 which is Memorials of the Dead Galway & Mayo.

It has 56 Gibbons records including Patrick & Sarah who are buried in KILMEENA OLD CEMETERY

Inscription: Lord Have Mercy on the Soul of Patrick Gibbons Rossmindle who died 1st Sep 1887 aged 47 years and his loving wife Sarah died 16th Feb 1939 aged 89 years.

So he was born 1839 or 1840 and she 1849 or 1850

I am happy to look for other Gibbons - just let me know who.

    www.rootsireland.ie/ has 2 records of the birth of Patrick Gibbons in Mayo 1 1838 & 1 1839

It also has all the children's birth records except Breede. It costs to view records.

Griffiths Valuation which is free to search online has 930 Gibbons in Mayo with 68 in Kilmeena

The Tithe Applotments (also free) has 2 Gibbons in Kilmeena both Thomas in 1827 (Patrick's father?)

The Irish Censuses- free to search - has 105 Gibbons in Kilmeena in 1901 & 115 in 1911

There are 131 Gibbons in the Irish phone book in Mayo with 4 in Kilmeena.

  • Hi, my great grandfather was Michael Gibbons who had a store/post office on Bridge Street in Westport. He was married to Julia Kelly. They lived at Marine Villa near the Quay overlooking Westport Bay and Croagh Patrick. They are buried at Kilmeena Cemetery. Their sons were Francis, Patrick Joseph and Edward (my grandfather). My grandfather's cousin, Tommy Joe from New Jersey came to visit us in the 1980's. He was a lovely man. So the evidence points to my great grandfather Michael being a brother of your grandmother, Mary Gibbons. I have a tree on Genes Reunited which you are welcome to share for further info on Michael's decendants.
