Hello, all! I am searching for information about the Geraghty family in Kilmeena in the early 1800s. Specifically I'm looking for connections to my 3rd great grandfather, Thomas Gerrity/Geraghty. He was born in Ireland about 1837 and was living in Hudson, Columbia, New York as of 1860 (eventually moving to Scranton, PA). I do not have a record of his birth, and can't find any Kilmeena parish records for the time period, but have found DNA matches with other Geraghty descendants whose ancestors were in Kilmeena during that time period as well as non-Geraghty Kilmeena residents, so I believe it is likely he was born there. I'm an old hand at genealogy but very new to Irish genealogy as my great grandmother (the Irish side!) was an orphan and I just recently discovered her parents' names after 20 years of research. Any guidance is much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Carinemily

Welcome to Irish genealogy & the site!

Here are some sources you might try

www.rootsireland.ie/ (costs - couldn't find him there though); Tithe Applotments 1823-37 (free - has 42 Geraghtys in Mayo) Griffiths Valuation (free - has 36 Geraghtys in Kilmeena 1855); Irish Censuses (free - no luck 1821, 31 or 51)

Col mentioned the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing. Here is a link to the Kilmeena parish records. You will note that most of the Geraghty records are in Cushalogurt townland. Possibly the father of Thomas is listed. If you have the name of Thomas' oldest son that may give you a clue for the name of Thomas' father.

  • Thank you both!

Very interesting. Cushalogurt is were the earliest known ancestor, Jamesy Geraghty, of one of my DNA matched relatives was born in 1841, just a few years after Thomas. DNA prediction is that we are 4th cousins and that would make Jamesy and Thomas brothers. Though we can't know that for sure, it's possible they were cousins, or some other relation. Working from the premise that they were brothers, Jamesy's eldest son was Michael, while Thomas' eldest was Richard. However, Thomas' second son was also named Michael, and there is a Michael in the Valuation. Was the eldest son being named after the paternal grandfather a hard and fast tradition, or were there sometimes exceptions?

    Thanks again!

Not hard and fast. There were deviations for all sorts of reasons.

  • My Geraghty family resided in what was once termed "the 1/2 Parish of Kilmeena" by persons I met with on a trip to Ireland several years ago.  I was told then that the original Catholic Church burned down.  We visited the old cemetery in Clew Bay which was very overrun with weeds.  Hopefully some attention has been paid to that situation and, with any luck at all, someone has transcribed headstone information.  Edward Geraghty is the earliest of the ancestors.  He was called "Neddie" by the family.  He was born in 1823 and died 1893.  Married to Bridgit Keane and had 11 children.  Eldest son was named Patrick.  Do not have birth place or marriage information for Edward.  His son, Michael came to Chicago, Illinois as GARRITY.

  • Thank you very much for your help.  I did have Edward's death date from paperwork sent to me from Ireland.  The baptism of Edward Geraghty had a birthdate of 1832, whereas the death information I have says he was born in 1823 since he died at age 70 in 1893. Could be some transposed numbers. Love how the mother in that baptism is "Mrs Geraghty".  Will have to keep looking since I am not even positive they were married in Co. Mayo.

  • Do you happen to have any information on Edward's son Michael who came to Chicago?  I'm looking for a Michael Garrity who was married to Mary Gannon and had at least one child named Thomas Joseph Garrity who was in Chicago in the late 1800s/early 1900s.  I believe Thomas was born in Kilmeena in either 1862 or 1872 and came to Chicago in his teens or twenties, possible with his mother and father (Michael and Mary).

  • Hello, I am married to Thomas Joseph Geraghty, whose father and grandfather also shared this name. I am currently in Ireland on vacation, but we have some geneology records in Chicago. They are also from Kilmeena and we just visited the grandfather’s grave today.

  • Hi I am also looking for Geraghty's in Kilmeena. My great grandmother was a Catherine Geraghty whose father was John and mother was Mary Cain according to her marriage record in Ontonagon Michigan in 1859. She was born in 1832 or 34 in Mayo County. She was not with family when she married Michael McCarty in Ontonagon and he was from Leitrim. I have found his family and now I would like to find Catherine's. I have made connections through DNA with a person whose ancestor is Patrick Barrett and wife Jane Geraghty from of course Cushalogurt, Kilmeena, Mayo. I think Jane is a cousin and her dad is a Patrick Geraghty who stayed. There are many John Geraghty's but which one is it? Cate and Michael's first born is John after both their fathers and first born daughter is Mary. Michael's mom was Bridget. None of the girls were named that. Perhaps there is no help. I just thought I'd throw in my ancestors also. I did find another DNA connect with a Garrity in Wisconsin. Patrick born 1822 I do not know where but his last name is Geraghty and his wife is Bridget Norton born in Roscommon. He could be a brother but I do not know he's from Mayo. That family is not as close a match as Patrick and Jane.

  • My great-grandparents lived in Cushalogurt. Patrick Geraghty (tombstone spelling) married Mary Lavelle. He was born in 1853, Mary in 1855. They had 9 children. Spelling varied, Geraty in the 1901 census, Geraghty in the 1911 census. My grandmother Catherine Sabina Geraty (birth record) was listed as Garrity in the Lucania ship passenger records and Ellis Island in April 1900. She was a 17-year-old "bridget", and the oldest sibling. She emigrated to Chicago, where her siblings followed. Garrity was the spelling in Chicago for all the family joining her in Chicago via chain migration. The family home and farm was/is located on the North shore of Clew Bay. I have visited a few times and have Irish citizenship and passport. She built a home in Chicago in 1920 which held 3 generations. Now our family is scattered throughout the United States. The farm in Cushalogurt remaind in the family today.

  • I have to believe I am related to some of you. My 2nd great-grandfather, Patrick Geraghty, and his wife, Ann "Nancy" Kelly Geraghty, came to the US from County Mayo, Ireland (in 1847). Based on people I am related to on AncestryDNA, I believe they were from the Kilmeena area. Patrick came over with several of his brothers. Some settled in Northeastern Iowa and at least one in Chicago. Have any of you done DNA testing? I am also on 23andMe and My Heritage.

jsparker77, I found this information while I was looking for my husband's ancestors, also have Thomas Geraghty's birth certificate, father Michael, mother Mary Gannon. I sent away for a copy of it, but it does not apply to my husband's direct ancestry.

  • Carinemily, sorry it took me 8 years to write back! I do have records that my husband's cousin gathered. Jamesy Geraghty's children, most of his children's children and grandchildren that are my husband's cousins and siblings. Might sound confusing but I could possibly share this if you'd like.
