My great great grandmother Jane Frances Hamilton Scott was born in Ballina Killala County Mayo on 4th September 1854. her father was John Hamilton Scott. I think her mother's name was Harriet. Harriet's family were farmers and she had several brothers. Unfortunately I don't know her maiden name or the name of the brothers. I don't know if John was local or passing through. The families were Methodists. Jane married a Yorkshireman Arthur Norton who came from a mill owning family but he himself became a school teacher in county Durham. I would be very grateful for any information about the family in Ireland

Hello Porpoise, I am looking at old queries and see the birth in Mayo, it appears to be the only one there although there are a lot of Scott baptisms in Mayo. It wa a Methodist baptism.
I found a possible marriage in Belfast in a 1st Presbyterian church of a John Scott, she is Harriet Heron, he is a merchant from Leeds and son of a surgeon and she is the daughter of a Presbyterian minister, you can see the civil record here https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Protestant marriages from 1845 only, all from 1864.
Question is what were they doing in Killala which is small indeed. Here in Griffiths valuation there is a John Scott in Lacken parish in Killala
https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=name… It only gives the name of the landholder and landlord and a map of the plot.
There is a Methodist museum in Belfast and i have found them very helpful previously.
Regards
Pat
