Hello- I am researching my Irish ancestors, starting with Anne Corcoran and her parents. Below is what I have gathered so far. Is it possible to find an address or the building/land they lived in that we could visit? Or meeting any distant relatives would be fun! Also any burial sites of those that didn't immigrate to the US. We plan on visiting Ireland (from the US) in July. Rahone is listed several times but I can't find any information on that location? Annie's birthdates seem to be all over the place.  Any help with my brick walls would be greatly appreciated.

Anne/Anna/Annie Louise Corcoran

  • Born around September 20, 1870*
    • September 28, 1870 source: Irish Birth Registry
    • July 7, 1872 source: US social security application
    • Abt 1876 source: marriage license & 1940 census
    • 1872 source: obituary & 1930 census
    • Abt 1875 source: 1910 census
    • Abt 1878 source: 1950 census
  • According to her civil birth record, she lived in Rahone in County Mayo and was part of the Killala Parish. I can’t see her actual USA SSN application but the extracted details say “Birth Place: Kallala Coun, Republic of Ireland”
  • Baptized September 25th, 1870 , Killala Diocese, Residence listed as Rahone
  • I believe she left Ireland from Queenstown (now called Cobh?) aboard the Brittanic and landed in NYC on October 13th, 1893. Intended Destination: Evanston, Illinois.
  • She died on August 13, 1964 in Evanston, Illinois

Annie’s Father: Michael Corcoran - I can't find any information about him coming to the US so I am assuming he died before the family came over around 1896?

Annie’s Mother: Mary McGuire - immigrated to the US in 1896, died in Illinois in 1912. One source has her being born in 1833 Castlebar, although I haven't confirmed that is the same Mary McGuire.

Michael & Mary likely had 4 or 5 kids that lived out of a possible 9 babies (according to a US Census):

  • Catherine (Kate) b: 1862/1866 - d:1930, immigrated to the US in 1896
  • Martin b:1866 - d:1947, immigrated to the US in 1888

  • John b:1869 – d:1938, immigrated to the US in 1896. He listed Kilfine as his last residence, which I assume is Kilifan in County Mayo.

  • Annie b:1872 – d:1964 (her detailed info is above)

Thank you!

Christina

  • In 1856, there were two Corcorans in Killala in Griffith's Valuation. You can see details here: https://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSe…

  • John Corcoran’s birth in what looks like Farnhill or Farmhill, Kilfian Parish on 2nd June 1867:

This might be Michael’s death (based mostly on the fact that the informant was Mary Corcoran and the age is presumably about right):

  • Christina: I believe Anne was born September 20 1870 as shown on her September 25th baptismal record (source Roots Ireland). John was born in 1867 rather than 1869. I believe that Kate and Martin were born pre-1864 (civil registration) and they were living in Kilfian parish where church records are not available. I'm going to alert one of our other volunteers who is more familiar with the Killala/Kilfian area. Roger McDonnell birth record for John Corcoran June 22 1867 see second record https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur… birth record for Anne 1870 see fifth record https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

  • Christina, Looks like many of the posts probably are correct, but I'll add some color, as I have ancestry from the area as well. I can also give you some tips of places you should visit. Looks like Michael Corcoran died age 50 on 18 July 1875 in Ratheskin, Kilfian Parish. Son John Corcoran was born 22 June 1867 to Michael Corcoran & Mary Maquire, in Farmhill, Kincon (Ratheskin & Farmill are right next to each other) Kilfine and Kilfian would be the same place, Kilfine would be the local pronounciation. Rathone could be Rathroe, see: https://www.townlands.ie/mayo/tirawley/kilfian/kilfian-east/rathroe/ http://goldenlangan.com is a great website for the local area. There were a number of Corcoran's living in Kilfian Civil Parish at the time of Griffiths Valuation (survey of head's of households): Corcoran John Annagh More Kilfian Mayo Corcoran Michael Keerglen Kilfian Mayo Corcoran Patrick Keerglen Kilfian Mayo Corcoran Patrick Seeaghanbaun Kilfian Mayo Corcoran Patrick Seeaghandoo Kilfian Mayo Corcoran Thomas Rathglass Kilfian Mayo There was one Corcoran in Rathreagh Civil Parish (which forms part of Kilfian Catholic Parish) Corcoran Michael Moneen Rathreagh Mayo I'm going to see about putting something together that is more precise for you, but if I can link your line to Grifiths Valuation, then I can provide you the exact location of where the family was living. I'm pretty certain that all of the above Corcorans would be your direct ancestors or relatives of them. More later, as I am about to head out for a little bit. • Wow, you volunteers are fast, thank you! If Griffith's Valuation was done between 1848-1864, and John Corcoran was born in 1867 in Kilfine/Kilfian, then I should be looking in that area for their property? Rather than the Michael Corcoran we found in Killala?

  • I looked at askaboutireland.ie for Griffiths Valuation, and have more detals: Rathreagh Parish
    Corcoran Michael Moneen Rathreagh Mayo

    /b>Kilfian Parish
Corcoran John Annagh More Kilfian Mayo (land, house, office)
Corcoran Michael Keerglen Kilfian Mayo (land) (land, house, office)
Corcoran Patrick Keerglen Kilfian Mayo (land) (land) (land, house, office)
Corcoran Patrick Seeaghanbaun Kilfian Mayo (land, house, office)
Corcoran Patrick Seeaghandoo Kilfian Mayo (just land)
Michael Corcaran & others also lessed land to Thomas Murphy in Keerglen.
I think we can assume that Michael & Patrick in Keerglen are related, probably father & son. Annagh Moore is right next to Keerglen, so he is probably closely related to Michael & Patrick.
Seeaghanbaun and Seeaghandoo are right next to each other, so I think Patrick had his home in Seeaghanbaun, and a field in Seeaghandoo.
I try to use Griffiths Valuation to create a snapshot of the families, and then use civil records to trace the next generation. If a family moves a little bit, likely what your family did as Michael Corcoran was a caretaker, then you can see which families did and did not move, and deduce which one was yours. I looked to see if there were any Corcorans in Kiflian Old & New cemetery, and didn't find any. There are some in Rathfran, though.

You might know this, but Griffiths Valuation covers only the head of household, so at the time Griffiths Valuation was taken, it was likely that Michael may have had a home or land. Also, it is very common for Irish to give the name of the largest town nearby as their place of birth. For Kilfian Parish, it would have been Killala, also, that is where Civil Records were taken at that period. Its the equivalent of growning up in the NYC suburbs, and saying that you are from New York when traveling :)

My suggest is you create a small document with the Corcorans in Kilfian & Rathreagh at the time of Griffiths Valuation, and then see if you can find births, marriages & deaths registered with the Civil Authorities on irishgenealogy.ie. Then look at the 1901 and 1911 census. If you find Corcorans living in the same townland, you know those aren't yours since yours emigrated. I have done this with my own family, and have gotten quite far through this process of elimination.

There is a Patrick Corcoran living in Keerglen on the 1901 census, and he would have been born in about 1835, so he is likely the Patrick Corcoran on Griffiths Valuation in Keerglen. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Kilfian_West/Keer…
