Hi Donna,
Hopefully someone living in the local community will know of the Foley family in Kerry.
In the meantime, if you would like some suggestions for researching your family tree, please try checking the following sources:
There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Kilgarvan. These date from 1818 for baptismal and marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4290. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.
Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
How do you know about the Slaghts connection?
You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).
You might find this link about the frequency of the name Foley in the mid-19th century, and the possible variants of the name, of interest: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&UserID=
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.
Kind regards,

Hi Donna,
You could try checking the church records on the following website: http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/
It looks as though you have already carried out a huge amount of research on your family. Well done! I cannot provide personal research for anyone, but perhaps someone from the local community can. With any luck, they will see your message and contact you.
Regarding early newspapers, you could try the following: http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/ or http://www.bl.uk/welcome/newspapers.html or Kerry County Library: http://www.kerrycolib.ie/
Best of luck with your research!
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

Hi, my name is Joe Foley and my father Dan Foley came from Slaughts, Kilgarvan Co Kerry. My Uncle John still runs the family farm down there. My Grandfather's name was John Foley and he had brothers and sisters who emigrated to america probably 100 years or so ago but I think we have been in the area since before the famine. I think the Foley's originally came from Killorgin before that. It's very possible that we are distantly related.

Hi there,
My great grandfather name was Michael Foley. He was a farmer but he was also a shoemaker. There was a census carried out in 1901 and 1911. Michael was 42 in 1901 so he would have been born around 1858/59. He did have siblings and as far as I know most of them emigrated to America and he was left to run the farm. None of them returned but just after the second world war a relative came to visit. He served in the US army in Europe and I remember my Uncle Michael telling me years ago about the stories this relative told him about Germany was like after the war. Uncle Michael would have been very interested in this type of thing but unfortunately both him and my father passed away last year.
However these are links to the 1901 and 1911 census and I hope you find them interesting

I live in Dublin but I go down to Kerry during the summer months for holidays. The scenery around there is breathtaking. If you have any other questions please ask.
