In the meantime, if you would like some suggestions for researching your family tree, please try checking the following sources:

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Kilgarvan. These date from 1818 for baptismal and marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4290. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

How do you know about the Slaghts connection?

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Cornelius Sullivan the legitimate son of Patrick Sullivan (Cooper) and Mary Hagarty was baptized by the Revd. Randal McCarthy on the 2nd of November 1829. His Sponsors were Danael Shea and Briget Hagarty.

Hi, my name is Joe Foley and my father Dan Foley came from Slaughts, Kilgarvan Co Kerry.  My Uncle John still runs the family farm down there.  My Grandfather's name was John Foley and he had brothers and sisters who emigrated to america probably 100 years or so ago but I think we have been in the area since before the famine.  I think the Foley's originally came from Killorgin before that.  It's very possible that we are distantly related.

My great grandfather name was Michael Foley.  He was a farmer but he was also a shoemaker.  There was a census carried out in 1901 and 1911.  Michael was 42 in 1901 so he would have been born around 1858/59.  He did have siblings and as far as I know most of them emigrated to America and he was left to run the farm.  None of them returned but just after the second world war a relative came to visit.  He served in the US army in Europe and I remember my Uncle Michael telling me years ago about the stories this relative told him about Germany was like after the war.  Uncle Michael would have been very interested in this type of thing but unfortunately both him and my father passed away last year.
