Does anyone have any information about Michael Haran, possibly born around 1849 in Swinford, County Mayo, married to Mary King and living at Cloonlara, Swinford? We have the birth records for their four children - Bridget, Martin, Michael and James, born between 1869 and 1876, and they say that their father was a farmer or sometimes a labourer. We know the younger Michael moved to Stockton-on-Tees in England. We don't know Michael Haran or Mary King's parents and we can't find a marriage record or death records for them either. We have been looking for them on RootsIreland, but can't find anything that we can prove is them or that we don't later find out is wrong.

Like you, I was unable to find a marriage record for Mary King and Michael Haran.

I did some searching of death records and found a lead but I'm not sure if I have the correct family.

I guess the most important questions are when your younger Michael Haran left for England and did he marry in Ireland?

The family I found lived in Cuillaun in Kilconduff civil parish. I found a 1900 death record for a Michael Haran with wife Mary as the informant.

first record 1900 death for Michael Haran

Then Mary with unmarried son Michael. Surname transcribed as Horan

    1901 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Swineford/Cuillau…

Then 1911 census where Michael had married and surname now shown as Harn

    1911 census  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Swineford/Cuillau…

1917 death for Mary Haran first record daughter Bridget Gallagher informant

    Let me know.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for your reply and the sources that you have provided. Unfortunately, the younger Michael Haran their son was in England at least by 1896 and we already have him on the 1901 census living with his wife and family in Stockton. Ancestry.co.uk - 1901 England Census. In response to your question, we have Michael's marriage index to Ellen Costello in 1896 which is also in Stockton in England.Ancestry.co.uk - England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1837-1915

So this means that Michael Haran & Mary King's son Michael wasn't in Ireland in 1901 or 1911, so the records you have recommended us for the family in Cuillan, Kilconduff must be a different family. It's quite frustrating because we found the elder Michael Haran's 1900 death record just a few days ago and thought we had finally found them, because Cloonlara and Cuillan are very close on Google Maps and all the information seemed to fit, but then we found the 1901 census follow up of the family and discovered that it couldn't be our ancestors!

Unfortunately, this means that none of the records you suggested can match our information, however, we didn't know that you could find records on the website Irish Genealogy so thank you very much for reccomending that to us. We are very excited about it and have already found the younger Michael's birth certificate image - we only had a transcription beforehand.

We will continue to keep searching and thank you for your help and quick reply.

    Best Wishes,

    Georgina
