I am trying to find records for the Duffy Family who lived in Cloonlara, Swinford, Kilconduff. My great grandmother was Catherine Duffy Durcan. Per a RootsIreland record, when she married Thomas Durcan of Cuilmore in 1891, her address was Cloonlara, her father’s name was James, and witness was Ellen Duffy. Her death record found on Ancestry and IrishGenealogy shows her dying in Cuilmore in 1897 at age 33. I am trying to find her birth record (I have searched Ancertry, RootsIreland, Irish Genealogy, and NLI without success.). Some of her children’s birth records found on RootsIreland identify Mary Duffy as their grandmother. Some of their sponsors were Bridget Duffy, Timothy Duffy, James Duffy, and Patrick Duffy.
I have found records for a Mary Duffy (maiden Name) and James Duffys’ children born in Cloonlara, with the exception of Catherine, on FamilySearch and RootsIreland. They had at least five children- Catherine (abt. 1864?, no Catherine next to James’ name on IrishGenealogy, Civil Records), James (1864- ), Thomas (1866- 1931), Bridget (1869- ), and Timothy (1871- ).
In addition to Catherine’s birth record, I am looking for James and Marys’ marriage record. I assume they were married around 1864. I have tried Ancestry, RootsIreland, Family Search, NLI, and IrishGenealogy. Since their first son was James, James’ father might be James. I think their daughter Bridget married Peter Moore in 1896 and they were living with her in Cloonlara per the 1901 census. James was 78 and Mary was 72. James died before the 1911 census. Per IrishGenealogy, Mary died in 1916.
Per the Griffith Valuation there was a James Duffy leasing land in Swinford. I am not sue if this is the sames James. My AncestryDNA results show I might be connected to the Duffys in Kilmovee but I do not know how.
Thank you for any help you can provide in tracking down these records or any information you might have on this family.

Mary:
I found an 1856 marriage record in Kilmovee for a James Duffy to a Mary Duffy. Kilmovee is loaded with Duffys so this may be another couple. My own Duffys are also from Kilmovee (Magheraboy) and my great-grandmother was Mary Duffy (1858-1939).
I would search both the Swinford and Kilmovee parish registers to see if you can locate Catherine. Sometimes records are missed in transcription

Roger,
Thank you for responding back. I had previously found the 1856 marriage record for James and Mary Duffy of Kilmovee. I posted a message on Ancestry.com about it and discovered, unfortunately, they were not my James and Mary.
I appreciate your assistance. Maybe, we are distant relatives.

Do you think it's possible that the Duffy's initially were from Kilmovee parish and moved to Kilconduff? They are right next to each other.
I did find a Catherine Duffy baptized Oct 12, 1865 in Kilmovee Parish. Her parents were James Duffy and Mary Rush. The sponsors were John Rush and Hanoria Duffy. They lived in the Townland of Skeheen. There is a whole family of Duffy's in that same town in Griffith's (Philip, Michael, Anthony, James, Bridget, John, Joseph, Thomas, Matthew, and Mary. Also a John Rush).
I could not find any Catherine Duffy in Kilconduff Parish baptisms. So, either she wasn't baptized (which does happen) or she was born in another parish.
My Devaney ancestors kept moving back and forth between Drumshinnagh and Culmore.
Good Luck!

Yes it is possible that they moved north to Swinford. My great-great grandparents in Kilmovee were James Duffy and Anne Rush! I also tested my DNA with Ancestry and Family Tree DNA. You may want to go to Gedmatch www.gedmatch.com and upload your DNA data from Ancestry. Gedmatch is a volunteer run site where you can upload your DNA data and see if you macth someone who tested with another company e.g. Family Tree or 23 and Me.

Debbie and Roger,
Thank you for your responses. I have found on AncestryDNA I am 4-6 cousins with Duffys from Kilmovee. We just don't know how we connect. I have also uploaded my results to gedmatch and Family Tree DNA.
I have not ruled out that Mary, John or both are from Kilmovee. I just have not found their records in Kilconduff or Kilmovee yet.
Mary's maiden name was Duffy; so the Mary Rush connection is not going to work. There are a number entries in Kilconduff's Parish Registration that are too dark to read; my Catherine Duffy about 1864 might be one of them.
I appreciate your suggestions and will continue to scan the parish registries, as well as, figure out my DNA matches. I have limited knowledge of these two parishes and your thoughts are helpful.

Attached Files1901 census Peter Moore and Brigid Duffy.PNG (32.58 KB)
Hi,
It is some time since the posts above but I hope someone is still using this website which I have just discovered.
We have a Brigid Duffy, born Feb 1869, who married my granduncle Peter Moore in Cloonlara in 1896. They lived there all their lives having at least 6 children. A baby Peter died young as well as a Anne who died of bronchitis. The 1901 Census shows that they were living with her parents, James and Mary Duffy aged respectively 78 and 72.. Brigid lived to be 93 and they are both buried here in Swinford where I live.
Are you using Familysearch website? I have a partial family tree there for the Moore/Durkan family which should be accessible for you. Have a look and let me know please if that is the same Brigid Duffy?

I think we are talking about the same Duffy family. Where is Fermanagh? My research shows most of Mary and James' children born in Cloonlara- Catherine (abt.1864 no record-1897), James (1864), Thomas (1866-1931 in Chicago), Patrick (1867 lived in Cloonlara), Bridget (1869-1962 lived in Cloonlara), and Timothy (1871). In my research, I did not find an Ann or Mary.
Were there two Duffy families living in Cloonlara with parents Mary Duffy and James Duffy?
I have been searching for a family connection and would appreciate discussing more about the Duffys of Cloonlara.

I have pulled records on RootsIreland for most of James and Marys’ children. If you would like me to send. Should I use the Email associated with your tree? This is what I definitely know about Catherine Duffy’s family.

Attached FilesSnipouts for Peter Moore and Brigid Duffy.docx (191.89 KB)
Hi and thank you for response. All I can say for now is that yes there are at least two Duffy families in Cloonlara.
Will have to go into the information you posted in greater detail, but first impression is that Peter Moore's wife Brigid is the daughter of your James - see the attached cutouts from the civil register where the father of the bride and groom are mentioned. Death record for Brigid also added. Am a bit puzzled by the name present at the death so will try to sort that out.
The Mary and Anne that I mentioned would have been the children of Peter and Brigid so registered as Moore.
I have some hints as to the whereabouts of some of the gll randchildren of Peter and Brigid which I hope to follow up in the coming months.
Fermanagh is within the six counties of Northern Ireland (the bit that sill belongs to the UK). When I look up the origins of the Moore name it seems that a lot of them originated in the north of Ireland.
There are also connections on my mother's side to Halligans of Killathurly, one of whom I am in touch with who lives in Chicago. I have no record of any of Peter and Brigid's children going to America. My relations/ancestors that I am searching for over there would be mainly on my mother's side.
I have to leave the ancestors now and deal with the living as we are having a fierce storm here in the west of Ireland which is very distrubing since it is still only September! Whereabouts are you living?
Best wishes,
Yes any info or questions you have can be sent to the email. Mooreeliz@gmail.com

Forgot to mention that yes there are lots of Durkans on Cortoon/Maudogue/Lowpark which is just past Cloonlara, between Swinford and Charlestown (which was not called Charlestown way back if you are looking for people in that are you need to look up Kilbeagh parish)
Here is a map with the counties

Hi,
I know this is an old thread.
Bridget Moore was my Grandmother Elizabeth Moore's mother in Swinford, County Mayo born around 1899. Most of the Moore children came to chicago but some stayed in Swinford. We have little or now ancestry info so contact me. Not sure what Parish, my Grandmother would always tell us the records were destoyed in a fire.

Michael,
I found some records on RootsIreland. There are probably some you can find on Irishgenealogy a free website managed by the Irish government. I was in Cloonlara, Swinford, Kilconduff Parish in 2019 and the Duffy/ Moore house is still there. Someone else owns it now. I will look at my notes to see what else I can share. If you are comfortable sharing your email I can send a picture of the house.
Regards- Mary

Michael,
I believe there were other Moore families living in the Swinford area. Your Bridget might descend from one of them. Do you know when she came to America? Who did she marry- when and where? When and where did she die? I can research Bridget on Ancestry and maybe find some more info that identifies who her parents were.
Some of Peter Moore's daughters opened a beauty shop in Chicago. My mother worked there while she was in high school.
Take care- Mary

Michael,
I found several trees on Ancestry with a Bessie/ Elizabeth/ Bridget Moore married to Matthias Baumhart in 1924. She came to America in 1914 noting a George as a person from home, Kilbride, Swinford. I found on RootsIreland a Bridget Moore born to George Moore and Bridget Healy 16 Dec 1897 in Kilbride, Swinford. George and Bridget had at least 5 children.
George was Peter's brother. He was born about 1878 in Kilbride to Anthony Moore and Ellen Durkin. They were married in Swinford in 1861.
Cheers - Mary

Michael,
I apologize. Further research needs to be done on George. Based on his children's births he would have been married around 1886. The George that was born to Anthony Moore and Ellen Durkin would have been too young and therefore not Peter's brother. There was a George born in Kilbride on June 16, 1860 to Thomas Moore and Bridget Moore. Not sure if I have found the correct record. If correct his parents' Thomas Moore and Brigid Moore (surname) were married in 1852. in Swinford.
If you're interested, I will continue to research- Mary

Michael,
Per a record on Irishgenealogy, George Moore and Bridget Healy were married in Swinford 24 March 1885. George was a farmer and his father's name was Thomas. Bridget was from Newpark, Swinford and her father, who was a farmer, name was William. George died in 1932 in Kilbride, age 72. Bridget died in 1948 in Kilbride, age 87. The family is on the 1901 and 1911 censuses living in Kilbride. For some reason, George's name is missing from both censuses.
You might want to post a message on the Kilconduff message board to see if anyone is familiar with this family.
Regards- Mary
