I am looking for any information about a Concannon family who lived in Ballinsmaula around 1840 - 1855 or longer.  This was Patrick Concannon and Mary (Tully).  They had 2 children, Catherine born in 1841 and son, Thomas, born around 1840 also.  I do have the baptism record for Catherine (but not for Thomas).  One of the sponsors for her baptism was Martin Concannon.  Based on this, I think Martin could have been Patrick's brother. (There is a tombstone for a Martin Concannon and wife Catherine in the Ballinsmaula Cemetary -- no year.)

I know that Patrick and Mary (and their children) left Ballinsmaula some time after 1852,  after being evicted.  They moved back to Mary's people in Cornacarta (Annagh parish).  Their son, Thomas, continued living in Cornacarta the rest of his life.  (I am a descendant of a Tully of Cornacarta so Mary would be in my extended family tree.)

I would be interested in finding out about the year of any evictions in Ballinsmaula.  This could help me knowing the date they moved to Cornacarta and maybe any later records about them.

Perhaps, I need to find what landlord estates were in Ballinsmaula and maybe there would be some records about evictions.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

  • I would like to add that besides filling in the picture about this family, I am hoping that this will lead me to finding more records about Mary Tully, such as her marriage record.  Perhaps she was married in Ballyhaunis since she was from Cornacarta before marrying (I'm assuming the marriage was around 1839).  If I can find this record, perhaps it will show her parents' names and we woud understand better her relationship to the rest of the family. I believe her parents may have been Patrick Tully and Catherine (unknown last name) and that Mary was likely born around 1820.  Thomas Concannon who lived in Cornacarta after leaving Ballinsmaula with his family is remembered by the Tullys who are still living in Cornacarta.  He is in the 1901 census there and never married.

    There is a 14 month gap in baptismal records for the Claremorris parish from January 29 1838 to March 26 1839 and it is highly likely that Thomas was born and baptized in that gap period and no record would be available.

    I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland for a marriage record for Patrick and Mary and no record is available. Civil registration started in 1864 for RC marriages and the Annagh (Ballyhaunis) RC records start in 1851 which would explain why there is no record.  FYI church marriage records rarely show parents names.

    The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows only five families in Ballinsmaula townland and no Concannons. The landlord was James J. Browne. There were a total of 191 acres in the townland and a Patrick Prendergast was leasing the majority of the acres-- 140.   This site  http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/#   allows you to search the Griffiths.  One of the tenants in Ballinsmaula was George McNabb. He is the only George McNabb in Mayo so if you search using his name, the search will take you right to Ballinsmaula.

    I did not find any info on evictions in Ballinsmaula.
