Trying to find information on Mulhern Family.  Understand many variations of spelling but I was told it was Mulhern. My Great Grandmother was Bridget Mulhern.  One of many children.  From Cloonaweema area.  Born about 1891.  Found 1901 census listing Mulhearn's living house #12. Father Michael, Mother Catherine, siblings Pat, Anne, Agnus, Bridget, Michael, Kate, Martin, Thomas, Eliza.  1911 census shows family Mulherrrin family living in house #1 with additional siblings John, Maggie, and James.  Not sure if this is correct family but dates seem right.  Bridget emmigrated to NYC around 1912? Married Thomas McGloin and had two children, James and Anna (my grandmother).  Passerger lists and Passport records show return to Cloonaweema/Charlestown in 1924 to visit family.  Bridget passed early 1950's in NYC.  I believe she was the only one to emmigrate to USA.  Any information would be so appreciated.

  • Hi Christine,

You may be aware that there are 4 Mulherns in Griffiths Valuation in Mayo 1856-57

There are none in Mayo in the Tithe Applotments but there are 44 in other counties (1823-37). Both these records are freely available online. I couldn't find any relevant public member tree on ancestry.com

On www.rootsireland.ie/ there is a civil birth record of Bridget MULHERIN with parents Michael & Catherine born 1891 in Mayo. Cloonaweema is not one of the parishes listed; there are 120 parishes in the list and you need to go through them 1 by 1 to find the right one. However, if you purchase the record on the site (you need to register and buy credit) it will give you the parish. It MAY also give you her mother's surname; you could then search for her parents' marriage which would give their fathers' names to help you work back.

I did search for the marriage of Michael Mulhern to Catherine ---  1880 + - 20 years & there was no record in Mayo but 1 in Donegal 1864 and 1 in Roscommon 1879

The 1901 census that youmentioned has Michael's age as 50 so born 1850 or 1851; there are no Mayo birth matches but 2 in Roscommon, 1 in Leitrim and 1 in Dublin.

  • Christine:

I found the Ellis Island record for your great-grandmother. However, she identified herself as Agnes Mulhern. Maybe she was Agnes Bridget or Bridget Agnes. In any event, she landed at Ellis Island April 21, 1909 on the ship Carmania. Her contact was her older brother Pat who was living in Searle Mulhawk. Not sure where Searle Mulhawk is. I did a Google search with no success. Hopefully this link works. You can also go to www.ellisisland.org and register and search for free.

Cloonaweema is a townland in Kilbeagh (Charlestown) parish. The family probably attended St. James Church in Charlestown. If you have Google Maps, you will see that Cloonaweema is very close to the Co. Sligo border just northeast of Charlestown.

  • Thank you for the information.  This is all very new and very confusing to me.  I am not even sure I am researching the right family?  But I do appreciate the response!

  • You may be surprised that many of the siblings have actually immigrated.     Don't get discouraged.   You have a great resource with the 2 censuses.  If you keep researching the siblings you may also find some other family researchers in the US.  I think you can prove it's your family just with the Ellis Island records.  There was only one Mulhearn family in Cloonaweena in the census and the father on the manifests is listed as Michael Mulhern of Cloonaweena.

I found another Ellis Island record for sister Elizabeth who is 20 in 1923.  The father Michael Mulhern of Cloonamena is listed on one page and her destination is her sister Bridget McGloin in NY is on the second.  Seems to me that connects it.

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?http://www.ellisisla… record for Agnes may be for her sister and not Bridget.  The age fits with the census.  I'd also believe that she is the same family as listed in the census.

Here are the others that could fit:

1907 Patrick (Charlestown) to Mary Mulhern

1920 Martin (same family) to Beatrice McGloin (NY)

  • Cathy,

Wow! Thanks so much. It's funny, I found all this same info today on the Ellis Island website. Was always told my great grandmother was the only one to come to the US.  Was so glad that the family I have been researching turned out to be the right family.  My search goes on for more info.

    Thanks again!!!

  • Sounds like you are a good detective.  You'll find them.  I did see this on Family Search which could make the mother's name Catherine Morley.

    https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGGF-ZS3

Given the possible older sister Mary, this might be a possible clue.  There was a Martin Morley living in Cloonaweena in 1901 with his wife's family.  As there is a Martin Mulhern, he could be a relation too.

    Good luck.

  • My Grandfather, Martin Mulhern, lived in Cloonaweema until his death in the 1980"s. I remember visiting him there several times during my childhood. His home was the last house on the narrow dirt road. My mom, Mary, sold the property after her brother, Patrick, passed away sometime in the late 1980"s. My mom may be able to provide information if you are interested.

  • I think Agnes (Agnus) Mulhern emigrated to the U.S. in 1909, at the age of 19, and married Patrick Campbell.., and Elizabeth Campbell (Patrick's sister) married Thomas Mulhern (Agnes's brother).

    Hi Larrymorr

My husband Patrick Mulhern was related to Martin Mulhern. My husband's father was Dominic John Mulhern and Martin was his Uncle. we were always told that Dominic's (known as Jack) mother died in childbirth and his father emigrated to America. We would love to find out more about Dominic's parents??
