Traveling from US to Ireland in November and am looking for information on my ancestors.  I've found the following on Census Records:  Residents of a house 39 in Hagfield (Kilbeagh, Mayo)

Maye Michael 35, Mary (Duffy) 32, John 8, Thomas 7, Mary 5, Michael 3, Martin (my grandfather) 2, Patrick

Residents of a house 4 in Hagfield (Kilbeagh, Mayo)

Maye, John 60 (my great-grandfather), Thomas 30, Catherine 22, Patrick 19, Martin 14, Bridgit 12

Cencus 1911

Residents of a house 1 in Derrynaleck (Kilkelly, Mayo)

Maye, Michael 45, Mary 43, John 19, Thomas 17, Mary 15, Patrick 11, James 9, William 8, Peter 5, Bridget 3, Anthony 1

Residents of house 9 in Treanacally or Hagfield (Sonnagh, Mayo)

Maye John 72 (my great-grandfather), Thomas 35, Bridget 22, MARTIN (my grandfather) 12

***Between 1901 and 1911 my grandfather, Martin went to live with his grandfather.  His brother, Michael doesn't appear in either 1911 census but under the Michael Maye family in 1911 it states 11 children, 11 children alive.  Could he have been lent out to another family?  Was this common in those days?  Also, my uncle told me my grandfather, Martin Maye, was baptized in 1889 in Charlestown, St. Michaels.  I can't find a St. Michaels.

At some point Martin Maye left Ireland and went to Wigan England where he worked in the mines.  In 1923 he entered the US through Ellis Island and settled in the Philadelphia area.  Married my grandmother, Margaret Healy whose faily was from Mayo but left for Wigan.  She came to the US with her sister Ann in the early 20s.

That's all I know and I'd love to know more.  I'll be staying in Adare so interested in hearing thoughts on making the trup up to Mayo and if so where?

Thank you!

Michael was working on another farm in 1911. See the record below. It was a fairly common practice for a son to work on another farm. My grandmother came from Co. Down and her brother Patrick was not with the family in the 1901 census report. I found him working on another farm in the area. The current church in Charlestown is St. James. http://www.thecatholicdirectory.com/directory.cfm?fuseaction=display_site_info&siteid=104681

There is a St. Michaels Church in Gurteen, Sligo about 11 miles from Charlestown.

My wife's grandfather was Patrick Maye, born 1900, so  the next brother after your grandfather Martin.

We believe that Patrick came over to Wigan also, before moving onto Barnsley where he worked in the mines. His wife was from Wigan, so he may have moved there first or perhaps met her when visiting his relatives in Wigan. I will have to dig out our information, but I am fairly sure that one half of Patrick's wife's family also originated in Mayo (think name was Heaney). There are still Mayes in Wigan. We were also in contact with the daughter of Tony the youngest brother. She is in London. Agian I will have to find the information but you may already have it.

It is such a pity that we have only just seen your message about you coming over last November.

Strangely I used to travel to Philly myself many times over the space of 10 years or so and my wife has also made that trip, but we had no idea of the Philly connectino at the time.

  • Hello, Graeme!

Thank you for your reply.  We had a lovely trip and did venture up to Kilkelly and Hagfield.  Visited Bushfield and Tample Graveyards and met a distant Maye relative.

Is your wife's mother Roseanna?  I have been filling in a family tree and am stumped on the date of Marry Duffy Maye's death.  Bushfield cemetary records have her death 17 April 1918, but I have a copy of a letter I've been told she wrote Roseanna in 1928.

Here is the link to the cemetery records:

PS  There are a lot of us Mayes in the Philly area.  In addition to my grandfather, Martin his siblings James, William, Mary and Delia also came to this area.

  • Sorry; I meant is your wife's grandmother Roseanna?  I have Roseanna and Patrick's children as Molly and Patricia.

Yes, my wife's grandmother was Rosanna Maye (nee Arkwright), wife of Patrick. Their daughters were Mary Maye (known as Mollie) and Patricia. My wife Siobhan is the daughter of Patricia. Patricia died in 2002 and Mollie died only towards the end of last year.

I have seen the copy of the letter that you refer to, as we met with Ellen Maye , daughter of Tony a while ago and she had a copy of it. We don't have a death date for Mary Maye at all.

It is a side of the family we haven't looked at for some time, but I will now. Not sure how to contact you other than on here, but I can give you my email address if that is easier?

We are just 25 miles out of London, so if you are ever over in the UK again please give a shout. I used to work for SmithKline and so probably visited Philly 50 times or more going to Merion, staying out near KoP mostly.

  • I am indirectly related to a Maye line in Wigan.  A Kevin Maye b.1932 who's mothers maiden name was McMahon.  He married a Mary Patricia Gallagher in 1957 in Wigan.

If that rings any bells with anyones research I'd be happy to help with what I know.

There is also a Philly connection with the photo I have attached.  I thought the girls came from the Gallagher/Foley side of my family, but the photo came from Kevin Maye's daughter, so perhaps they are from that side.  Apparently the photo was taken by Fowler, 238 West Eigth St, Phillidelphia.

If on the off chance anyone recognises them, let me know!

  • Hello Mike,

Thank you for sharing the beautiful photo!  I have passed it on to my mother to see if she knows who the women might be.  Is there a date on it?  I would love to hear any information on the early life of the Maye boys in Wigan.  My grandfather, Martin, left in about 1922.  According to my records, Kevin Maye is the son of Thomas Maye, my grandfather's brother.  I'm sure you've seen the photo but I attached the one I found online of Thomas at 'The Shamrock'. In this photo Thomas looks so like my grandfather.   I'm assuming we are talking about the same family.

I'll let you know if my mother recognizes the women in the photo.

    Thank you!

  • Sorry, I don't believe there is a date on the photo.  I don't have the original, just a scanned copy and the information emailed to me.

Unfortunately, I can't help with very much early Maye history as I am only related  through the marriage of my cousin to Kevin Maye, and I certainly believe that this is the correct Kevin Maye that matches yours.

I am in contact with Kevin's daughter, who still lives in the vacinityof Wigan and if I can find any further information then I will post it or mail you directly.

Happy to help where I can if anyone else comes across this thread in the future.

  • Tricia Walters,

This same John Maye was married to my Great Grandfather (Thomas Harrington)'s sister, Mary Harrington.  They were married on 6 Feb 1866.  By the 1901 Census, John is listed as widow which would mean my Great Aunt Mary had passed away.  I've located what I think are birth records for some of their children (Thomas, Twin sons John and Martin, and Catherine).

This could be an exciting link!
