My great-great grandfather, Michael Ruane ("Rowan" in America) emigrated to the U.S. in 1847 with his wife Nancy Ann Gallagher and their children, including my great-grandmother Rosanna "Rosie."

Michael Ruane/Rowan was born about 1790 in the area of Foxford, County Mayo. His wife Nancy was born about 1804. They married in 1824.

Michael and Nancy and their family settled in Minnesota near James Rowan (b. 1826) and William P. Rowan (b. 1828). These men were possibly sons of Patrick Rowan?

Were Michael and Patrick brothers? I would like to know more about this generation.

I have seen the 1911 census showing several Ruane/Gallagher families in Rinnananny.

As you can see from the link below, Foxford is located in the Civil Parish of Toomore, Co. Mayo:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction=TownlandsInCivil&civilparishid=1796&civilparish=Toomore&citycounty=Mayo

Records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Toomore begin in 1833 for baptisms and 1871 for marriages. There are some missing dates for baptisms though, notably between March 1840 and January 1870. You could search the sites suggested below, in case your ancestor was born in a nearby parish, as you are not entirely sure Foxford is their place of birth.

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

Other important sources include the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith?s Valuation. Even though these sources only record the head of the household, the information is very important and can be valuable:

    Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

    Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

The National Archives of Ireland: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/  you can search the 1901/1911 Census on the National Archives page too, for instances of the family name at that time

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Best of luck with your search

  • If you are still there!

Ruane is actually Royane family name that was corrupted to Rowan or Ruane. A Royane family were millers on the Knockmore side of Foxford town in the 19th century. A branch ended up in Moygowangh parish.
