I am trying to trace my ancesters and any family that may be in and around Claremorris.  My grandfather was Robert Joseph Grogan.  He left Ireland for work in England, where he became a railway goods checker.  He married over in England in 1917.

His siblings were Bedelia Mary Grogan, Patrick Michael Grogan, James John Grogan and Honora Sarah.  My grandfather's father was called Andrew Grogan and he married an Ann Louden in 1872.  She had a brother called Michael who emigrated to America.  I have found a record of their marriage and have now learned that his father was called Robert Grogan and Ann's father was called Michael.  I have not been able to find any details in relation to where Andrew was born.

I have found out a little more about James John Grogan one of my grandfather's brother through St. Colmans Church where he is buried.

If anyone could help me find out any more about my family either the Grogan side or the Louden I would be grateful.  Andrew Grogan died around 4 January 1897 and according to the Leitrim-Roscommon 1901 census Anne Grogan was living in Church Street with my grandfather, James and Norah, together with various others whose occupations related to the railway.

Many thanks.

  • Hi Cheryl,

Just had a look on rootsireland.ie for Grogans.

I imagine the older Robert must have been born around 1805 to 10 so searched 1810 + - 10  years all counties and got a baptism - 1806 in Antrim - the only one that came up.

Robert Joseph is also there in Mayo 1878.

If you purchase the record you will get the older's parents and the parish; the Tithe Applotments (free search) will give you their whereabouts in 1823-27.

Gotta go to golf now - will try Loudens later.

  • Hi Cheryl,

I searched rootsireland.ie for Ann Louden father Michael but got no matches.

I then tried without Michael and got 2 matches - both 1845 - 1 in Tyrone and 1 in Mayo - the parish wasn't Claremorris however.

I searchedrootsireland.ie marraige records for Michael Louden Mayo and got 2 (same 1 I suspect) both 1872. Given that was no use as Ann got married that year I tried for the whole of Ireland for the marriage of Michael and got 1 in 1804 in Louth!

I didn't get any joy on ancestry from the public member trees.

Sorry Cheryl, hopefully someone on the Claremorris page will have more luck for you.
