Hello

I am trying to trace details of the Stenson family prior to them moving to Liverpool prior to the 1841 census. Have not been able to find anything to date on them.

Details are provided from four different census returns.

Bartlomew Stenson born abt 1811 in Castlebar. he was married to Mary Stenson born abt 1811 in Castlebar. Do not know her maiden name.

His daughter was Ann Stenson born abt 1829 in castlebar.

His son was also Bartholomew Stenson (could possibly be Patrick used somewhere in the forename but not sure)

born in castlebar abt 1831. Married to Mary Stenson (nee Sweeney) who was also born in castlebar.

Grateful for any help you can provide. Many thanks.

  • Good Afternoon

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.

As you can see from the link below, Castlebar Town is located in the Civil Parish of Aglish in Co. Mayo:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction=TownlandsInCivil&civilparishid=1736&civilparish=Ballinchalla&citycounty=Mayo

Records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Aglish begin in 1838. As this is the case, there will be no church records for Bartholomew if he was baptised in this parish. There are some places where you can search online on the basis that he from another area, however these websites do not have complete collections and many do not cover the period after 1900:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However, so far only Counties Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork have been covered.

Other important sources include the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith?s Valuation. Even though these sources only record the head of the household, the information is very important and can be valuable:

    Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

    Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

The National Archives of Ireland: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/  you can search the 1901/1911 Census on the National Archives page too, for instances of the family name at that time

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Best of luck with your search

  • Hello   I have managed to find some further information from the marriage certificate of Patrick (also known as Bartholomew on some recrods) Stenson to Mary Sweeney in Liverpool on the 1st December 1850. The additional information is that Mary Sweeneys father was called Owen Sweeney who must also have been born in Castlebar. I haven't got a birth date for him but Mary's birth range is between 1835 and 1837 and she was born in Castlebar. Hope this might help. Haven't been able to find anything else since the previous post. Best Regards Terry Green
