My gg grandfather, Charles McGill was born about 1819 in Co. Mayo. I don't know if he was actually born in Castlebar but the inscription on his tomb stone in Covington, KY says he was a native of Castlebar co. Mayo, Ireland. He is first seen in the US census for Cincinnati with a wife, Mary and a son, Thomas, born in 1848. Mary passed away soon after this census because he married Rose McKenzie, of County Mayo in 1852 or 3. Rose was born about 1827. When they married they moved to and settled in Covington, KY. Rose McKenzie had a sister oe cousin named Catherine McKenzie and she was married to Patrick Burke, a native of Roscommon,Ireland. Can anyone help me with my 2 yr. search? I have a lot of info about them and their children in KY, OH, and Washington, DC but I would love to know Charles or Charlie and Rose's beginnings. Thank you for any help.

Hi Barb
The only record of a birth/baptism of Charles McGill Mayo 1819 on www.rootsireland.ie/ is a baptism in 1816.
I went through all the parishes and found that it was Oughaval C of I
You need to purchase credit to view the full record which MAY have the parents' names.
No luck with Rose or Cathleen McKenzie though.

This is the newer Cemetery in Kilmeena, but it has a lot of Gills listedhttp://www.bernieworld.net/Cemeteries/Kilmeena/Kilmeena%20Cemetery.htm
In the Griffiths Valuation there is a Hugh McGill living in Aglish which would be Castlebar.he is living in New Antrim, this is interesting because it is so named after the settlers who came from Antrim to work in the Linenhall (Linen trade) ..

In 1901 there is another family living in that house, - Bloxom, that name may mean something to you...

No McGills living in the Castlebar area at this stage,
These are some of the migrant to Mayo but I don't see McGill on it, though when you look at the Censui McGills is commonly an Antrim name.
Hope this helps
