My name is John Graven. I live in Runcorn,Cheshire. I've traced my family tree back to a James Graven(born c1846 in the Castlebar area). He was married to an Alir(Celia?) Jordan(born c1837). They had a son John (born c1865) before moving to Middlewich,Cheshire between 1865 and 1869, where they had more children.

Someone found a Mayo birth/baptism record for a James Gravin & Celia Jerdin having a son John in 1865 living in Thomas St (Castlebar?). This might be them.

Due to the loss of Irish Census records in a fire I'm struggling to go any further. However, I'm excited to find that a surname so rare in England is still common today in the Westport/Castlebar area.

Any help appreciated.

  • John: I looked at the 1901 census for Co. Mayo and there were 8 Graven families, four of the families were on Achill Island which I eliminated. The other four families were in Islandeady parish which is just to the west of Aglish parish the home of Castlebar. NOTE the last of the four records shows the family in Kilmaclasser parish but I believe that Derrartan townland is in Islandeady parish. Like Col, I looked at the Roots Ireland indexes. There were two John Gravin baptismal records in the middle of the 1860s both in Aglish RC church. The father was James on both records. The 1863 record had a mother named mary and the 1865 record had a mother named Celia. I could not determine the maiden name for either mother. • Col,

    Thanks for your help.

This is the first breakthrough I've had in Ireland. Looks promising.

Islandeady keeps cropping up in records I find for "Gravens".

Interestingly, Julie Walters(the actress) was on TVs "Who Do You Think You Are?" the other week. Her ancestors come from Islandeady! So I saw a lot of it on TV.

I'm 64 now - I guess as you get older these things become more important.

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    best wishes,

  • Roger,

Thanks so much for your help.

The 1865 baptism  record seems to be the one.

I can't tell you how nice it is to get so much help.

    best wishes,

    John Graven

  • John:

Civil registration started in Ireland in 1864. I searched for the 1865 birth record in the Castlebar registration district. with no success. I even looked under Craven/Cravin.
