Looking to find anyone who might know of Family Tree siblings of  PETER MALONE & Mary? (abt 1800) who paid Tithes on Claggarnagh 1823-37 & whose son JOHN MALONE (1818-1882) & MARY GIBBONS Malone (abt 1833) occupied the same land Claggarnagh West during Griffiths Valuation til 1864.  It is possible that John's siblings might have been Rev. Fr. Patrick J. Malone (Adm. of St. Muredeachs Cathedral in Ballina in 1850), Rev. Fr. Hugh Malone, Winifred Malone & Mary Malone.  My greatgrandfather was also a PETER MALONE (1854).  He had 5 other siblings including PATRICK J. MALONE (1850) later of Ballina, Co. Mayo.

Have seen Claggarnagh & Claggarnagh West listed in docs under Burrishoole Parish and Addergoole Parish.   To confuse matters there is another set of townlands with same name & Malone's located near Islandeady in which I am not interested.

Hope to return to Ireland again this summer or fall & would like to connect.

Slan!

  • Just to help you with some of the locations you mention

The Claggarnagh area is in Islandeady  on the Westport to Castlebar Road, it may be under Burrishoole Parish which includes Newport area, but not Addergoole (which is North Mayo side)

A good website for researching North Mayo is  http://goldenlangan.com/home.html

  • Thanks for your response.

Yes, you are correct.  I have seen and driven through the Claggarnagh area you mentioned in Islandeady.  Until I looked closely at the maps I did not realize that there were Claggarnagh townland duplicates not that far away from one another in Co. Mayo.  So I am aware of the townland between Westport and Castlebar.  When I google this is the first area that pops up.

But if you look just to the west of Glenhest, near Lough Beltra, on the way to Newport, you will see another Claggarnagh (or Cloggernagh or Clogernagh) West & East townland.   After some understandable confusion when I first started researching family, this is the townland to which I ultimately traced my John Malone & his family via Griffiths Valuation at Valuation Office in Dublin & the christening records of my great-grandfather Peter (1854) & siblings.  These docs were listed in Addergoole parish. The Tithes Applotment had a Peter Malone (abt 1800) also leasing Claggarnagh townland even earlier (abt.1823-37).  If I recall correctly it was listed under Burrishoole at that time.   I visited the ancestral Malone townland that I researched on my trip from US in Oct. 2010 and met the present owners, who are descended from the McManamon family, who were ancestral neighbors of my gggrandfather John.

It was amazing to me that if the above docs are to be believed, this means that my Malone ancestors apparently stayed on their leased townland, owned by Col. Charles Knox, through the "An Gorta Mor" ((Great Hunger).

Do you have any Malones that are connected to Co. Mayo?

    Slan,
    Tom

  • Hi Tom,

No Malones from Burrishoole; I have Hamil, Berry, McNally, Gibbons, Connolly ancestors from Burrishoole.  The rest of my ancestors are from North East Mayo - Kilfian, Kilcummin & Kilmoremoy parishes.

  • Hi John!

Think we know one another from our Mayo Geneaology Facebook page.

Don't recall if we compared Gibbons branches.   If so and for benefit of other interested XO posters, you might recall my gggranmother is Mary Gibbons Malone (abt. 1833).  I believe she had a brother Myles Gibbons (abt. 1839) who was a witness at christening of one of John Malone's & Mary's children.

I suspect her parents might be Dominick Gibbons (abt 1800) and Mary (of course) (abt. 1800) with Dominick (abt. 1843) also as a sibling.

Turns out John's & Mary's second son, John (1852) married a Margaret McKenzie in Kilmoremoy before coming to Lowell, MA, USA to join John's mother, father & a three siblings, who left around 1875.   Patrick J. (abt 1850) stayed behind, prospered in business, & married 3 wives & had 3 families, including the Dillon-Malone's in Ballina, Co. Mayo,  Sarah Jane Malone Curley operated a upholstery/drapery shop in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo with husband Hugh.

From my humble unscientific research, it appears to me that the Gibbons clan seems to be one of the most popular surnames in Co. Mayo.  And don't get me started on the Mary's.  LOL

Thanks for all your contributions to Mayo Facebook.

    Slan!

  • Tom & Dympna,

Strange that we meet here as well!  For my Gibbons, I have a 3rd great grandmother Margaret Geraghty nee McNally (maiden name was Gibbons) born in about 1824 to a Thomas Gibbons and Jennie Connolly - and I am fairly certain that Jennie was Mary Jane (as all Jennie's in that line were baptised as Mary Jane).  I am fairly certain that Thomas and Jennie emigrated to Scranton, which is where Margaret settled, probably around 1860.

    John

PS - thanks for the kind words.
