I am looking for the family of Brian M'Donagh of Bohola.  His son, Bernard M'Donagh immigrated to Canada settling in Portland, New Brunswick.  Bernard's daughter, Belinda, moved to the United States (Massachusetts).  She is my great grandmother.

I do not know who Brian M'Donagh was married to and I do not know any other of his children's names.

Any help you oculd provide would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any approximate dates on Brian? By the way, Brian and Bernard were used for the same person.

  • Hi Roger -

We think that Brian, the father of Bernard, died around 1830 at the age of 82.  That would make his birthday 1748.  Those are the only vague dates I have.

I thought he may go back that far. I checked the Tithe Applotment listings and could not locate a record. www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie  Chruch records are not available for that time period.

After doing more research and using an Obit which was published in the Mayo Telegraph, I've got an exact date that Brian M'Donagh died, March 3, 1846.

Are there any church records I could check?  He was a Roman Catholic and was borne on a hearse to his own parish, which I would guess is Bohola.  He was prominent enough that the MP who had just been elected, Joseph Myles MacDonnell attended his funeral.

Any guidance you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Church records for Bohola parish do not start until 1857. In my experience church records only captured baptisms and marriages.

Yeah, I have access to church records, and you're right. That's when the ones for Bohola start.  Hence, my reaching out on this site to see if any one in town knows of the McDonoughs.

Do you know if there are records for church yards for around that time?

    Thanks

There is a findagrave site for St. Josephs cemetery in Bohola and also an old cemetery in Bohola. You may want to contact Dympna Beckett Joyce who compiled the graves.
