Looking for my great grandmother's family. Her maiden name was Ellen Coughlin (I think). My grandmother was Delia Carney who emigrated to America in the early 1900's. I found Ellen through a census, but no mention of who her husband was. Any information would be great. I am visiting from America in April.

Hi Teresa
There are 3 birth baptism records of Ellen Coughlin Mayo on www.rootsireland.ie/:
Ellen Coughlin baptism 1840
Ellen Coghlan baptism 1884
Ellen Coughlin birth 1884
Do you have an approximate year of birth for her?

Hi Teresa,
It would be helpful to know where the Carneys lived. Presumably it was on the 1901 Census that you found Ellen. Where did she live? On what date did Delia go to the US? To New York?

In 1901 Ellen lived in Bekan. Delia arrived in New York City in 1907.

It appears that your grandmother, Delia Carney, was the daughter of Hugh Carney (a native of Carrowkeel East, parish of Annagh) and Ellen Hunt (Bekan townland), who were married in Bekan church on 30 January 1886 (witnesses: John Carney & Margaret Hunt). They had 5 children:
Mary Ellen, born 1886, emigrated to New York in August 1904, going to her cousin Mrs John Beck in Vandsburg.
Delia, born 1888, emigrated to New York in May 1907, joining Mary Ellen.
Sarah Anne, born 1890, emigrated to New York in 1911 along with her younger brother James. There she married an Irishman, Frank McMahon. Their son Fr Bernard McMahon was a distinguished scholar and English professor at the College of New Rochelle. He died in 2011.
James, born about 1903, emigrated to New York in 1911 with Sarah Anne. He married Elizabeth Whitney, a native of Co Longford, Ireland. I met her and her son Jimmy Carney in New York some 30 years ago.
Margaret, born about 1897, married Jim Fitzmaurice of Reask, Bekan. They emigrated to England.
The family (parents and 3 youngest children) are recorded in Bekan townland in the 1911 census under the surname Kearney.
Hugh Carney died in 1933 and his wife Ellen died about 1941.
