Hello, I am trying to find information with regard to Annie Flannery b.1897 (daughter of Michael Flannery and Bridget Fergus). Annie married Michael McGuinness of Lurgan, Bekan, Mayo, the marriage took place in Claremorris (1933), their children were Bridget Agnes b.1934, Mary Theresa b.1936 and Nora b.1940.  Unfortunately I cannot find out what happened to Annie, Michael and their three daughters and wondered if anyone would be able to help?

Michael Kelly of Bekan kindly found this information for me with regards to Michael McGuiness's Family:

Around 1889 Patrick McGuinness (c 1863-before 1941) married Honor (aka Nora or Annie) Conway (c 1870-4 Feb. 1941) and they had 8 children of whom 5 were surviving on 2 April 1911. The children included James (c 1892-before 1911?), Michael (1894-??), John (1896-9 Dec  1981), Patrick (1900-??), Mary (1901-??) and Peter (c. 1903-??).

In a transcript of some Bekan parish baptismal records, I found the following:

26 August 1894: Michael of Patrick McGuinness and Nora Conway, sponsors: Peter McGuinness. Mary McGuinness

27 September 1896: John of Pat McGuinness and Honor Conway, sponsors: Martin Finn, Mary Byrne-Culnacleha

18 March 1900 (born 12 March): Pat of Pat McGuinness and Honor Conway, sponsors: Thomas T(?), Kate Murphy-Coolagh [Cossallagh?]

8 September 1901 (born 2 September): Mary of Pat McGuinness and (?), sponsors:  James Burke, Mary Murphy-Cossallagh (Note added: She married James Mellet 13th Feb. 1926).

Cossallagh townland adjoins Lurgan – locally they may be used interchangeably.

Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Regards Rosaleen

  • Dear Fergie

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Unfortunately due to privacy reasons we can't (even if we had them) provide information about families post 1915 without their consent (in consideration of the 100 year rule). I had a look for a grave for the family but so far I am unsuccessful - if you find out independently let me know as I live abut 25 minutes away and could get some photos if a grave/stone was evident.

Have you considered local obituaries from the Irish Newspaper Archive to see if there are any recorded? You can subscribe for a short length to the site so it's reasonable enough and might yield results:

  • Dear Clare,

Thank you very much for your e-mail regarding the Flannery and McGuinness Families.  I know that Annie Flannery came from a quite a large family.  Her Mother (Bridget Fergus) was my Father's Great Aunt and in 1873 she married Michael Flannery of Rhanagard at Bekan Parish Church.  Michael Flannery's first wife was Mary Donnelly of Ranaghard and they had two children: Mary b. 04/10/1868 - Ballynagran, Claremorris, Owen b. approx. 21/11/1869 died: 1939 in Winthrop, Massachusetts (he married Margaret Mary Ferrins).

Michael Flannery and Bridget Fergus's children were: Maria b. 1874 (died 1901 in Watertown, Massachusetts), Bridget b. 1876 - Ranaghard (she married James Rabbit and they were the Grandparents of Pat Rabbitte - he has confirmed this to me in an e-mail last year), William b. 1878, Margaret b. 1880, Rodger b. approx 1881 (he may have died very young as he is not listed in the 1901 census), Martin b. 1883, Michael b. 1885, Patrick b. 1888, John b. 1891 and Annie b. 1897.

Whilst I was on holiday in Knock last year I went to the Cemetery at Ballindine and found quite a large cross which just had R.I.P. FLANNERY across it so this may have been Annie's Family.  At that time I did not know Annie had married Michael McGuinness (I found out last year a couple of days before returning home so did not have time to investigate further but as I said before Michael Kelly kindly supplied some information).  I am sure that one time when I was trying to find out what had happened to the Flannery Family I looked on  the irishnewsarchive.com website and found mention of a McGuinness (nee Flannery) in Kildare, Maynooth and who was previously from Rhanagard, Claremorris so I will have another look this week to see if I can find out anything more.

I will be in touch with you again and thank for offering to see if there was a grave for the family.

    Kind Regards, Rosaleen
