My great grandmother Margaret Boyle was born in Doncaster in 1854 and as an adult moved to Bradford with her widowed mother together with her brothers and sisters. Her parents were Edward BOYLE (c1805) and Mary NILAND (c1819) who were born and married in Ireland. From English census records I’ve been able to find the following information on my ancestors:
1861, at 11 Skinners Yard, St Sepulchre Gate Without, Doncaster:
Edward BOYLE, Head, Mar, 56yrs, Ag. Labourer, Ireland Foxford
Mary BOYLE, Wife, Mar, 40yrs, Ireland Foxford
Barney BOYLE, Son, Un, 20yrs, Ag. Labourer, Ireland Foxford
John BOYLE, Son, Un, 15yrs, Scholar, Yorkshire Doncaster
Mary BOYLE, Daur, Un, 12yrs, Scholar, Yorkshire Doncaster
Sarah BOYLE, Daur, Un, 10yrs, Scholar, Yorkshire Doncaster
Margaret BOYLE, Daur, Un, 7yrs, Scholar, Yorkshire Doncaster
Thomas BOYLE, Son, Un, 5yrs, Scholar, Yorkshire Doncaster
Edward BOYLE, Son, Un, 2yrs, Scholar, Yorkshire Doncaster
1851, at 1 Farrington’s Yard, [next door to 6 Skinners Yard], Doncaster:
Edward O’BOYLE, Head, Mar, 40yrs, Farm Labourer, Ireland
Mary O’BOYLE, Wife, Mar, 32yrs, Ireland
M O’BOYLE, Son, Un, 9yrs, Ag. Labourer, Ireland – [has to be Barney miss recorded as ‘M’ or possibly has a first name beginning with ‘M’ and ‘Barney’ is his middle name]
J O’BOYLE, Son, Un, 5yrs, Yorkshire Doncaster
M O’BOYLE, Daur, Un, 3yrs, Yorkshire Doncaster
S O’BOYLE, Daur, Un, 1yrs, Yorkshire Doncaster
John Coalman, Lodger, Wid, 50yrs, Farm Labourer, Ireland
I’ve tried without success to find Edward, Mary and their eldest son Barney/Bernard in Foxford, Co. Mayo and hence I’ve now turned to researching other O’BOYLEs/BOYLEs in Doncaster of which there are fortunately very few and I’m fairly certain that they will all turn out to be related in some way or other. Refer following information from English Census records:
1851, St Sepulchre Gate, Doncaster:
Michael HEABY, Head, Mar, 40yrs, Labourer, Roscommon Elphin
Patrick HEABY, Brother, Un, 30yrs, Labourer, Mayo Foomore [Toomore?]
Barney O’BOYLE, Lodger, Un, 28yrs, Labourer, Mayo Ballintober [born c1823 and possibly younger brother of Edward?]
1851, St Sepulchre Gate, Doncaster:
John BOYLE, Head, Mar, 27yrs, Bricklayer, Ireland Roscommon [born c1824 and possible brother to Edward?]
Elizabeth BOYLE, Wife, Mar, 27yrs, Ireland Ballaghadereen
Charles BOYLE, Son, Un, 5yrs, Yorkshire Leeds
Eleanor BOYLE, Daur, Un, 2yrs, Yorkshire Leeds
1851, 16 Skinners Yard, St Sepulchre Gate Without, Doncaster:
Daniel BOYLE, Boarder, Un, 42yrs, Image Maker, Ireland Co. Sligo [born c1809 and possible brother to Edward?]
1851, 19 Skinners Yard, St Sepulchre Gate Without, Doncaster:
Daniel BOYLE, Head, Mar, 30yrs, Ag. Labourer, Ireland Co. Leitrim [born c1821 and possible brother to Edward?]
Ann BOYLE, Wife, Mar, 26yrs, Ag. Labourer, Ireland Co. Leitrim
Tithe Applotments 1833:
John Boyle Cloonthicunny, Kilturra, Achonry, Mayo
James Niland Cloonthicunny, Kilturra, Achonry, Mayo
James Niland Cooladoomore, Kilturra, Achonry, Mayo
Thos & Jnos Niland Doomore, Kilturra, Achonry, Mayo
G Kaleher & Js Niland Cornagallagh, Kilturra, Achonry, Mayo
James Niland Fouford [Foxford?], Toumore [Toomore?], Achonry, Mayo
From the above I’m given to assume that Mary Niland is probably from either the parish of Kilturra or Toomore which both would fit with 1861 census record stating ‘Foxford’. Also, Edward Boyle and his brothers(?) Barney, Daniel & John could be from Ballintober, Co. Mayo, Co. Sligo, Roscommon, Co. Roscommon
If someone can make sense of the above and provide a way forward for my research it would be much appreciated. I’ve visited Ireland on two occasions in the past for holidays and family research but mostly confined to archive centres in Dublin since without a parish of origin I’ve not had any meaningful destination in Mayo/Sligo/Roscommon to home into. When I next visit Ireland I would love to visit the areas and churches where my ancestors were born and bred and possibly to make contact with distant cousins.

Hi Graham
That's quite a job you've done there.
You might want to try www.rootsireland.ie/
There is a baptism record of Edward Boyle 1805 - county is Westmeath (same result for O'Boyle)
For Mary Niland there are 4 matches:
Naylon 1819 Meath; Nealan 1819 Waterford; Nealon 1818 Limerick & Nilan 1818 Cork
Perhaps illiteracy and transcription errors could make one of these relevant?
You could also check www.irishgenealogy.ie/

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. With the exception of the 'Nayland' variant spelling I've looked at these in the past but have currently ruled them out as being too for away from the known place of origin stated in 1861 Census i.e "Foxford" which might refer to the Parish or the Townland and is probably the latter. This then leaves loads of parishes to choose from including ones currently not in Co.Mayo but also across modern boundaries within Co.Sligo and Co.Roscommon. However, I don't think my ancestors were born too far away from Foxford and hence I'm hoping to find a possible connection in this area. For example after posting my previous record I discovered an British Army Service Record on 'findmypast' for John BOYLE enroled on 17th July 1839 aged 19yrs and birth year calculated as 1820. The record is for army pensioner, long service of 21yrs, discharged on 2nd October 1860 due to ill health. It also gives his parish of birth as 'Straid', Town of birth as 'Foxford' and County of birth as 'Mayo'. Unfortunately no next of kin or parents names included in the record and so can't yet link this John BOYLE with my family ancestors but it certainly looks promising.
