Hi
I emigrated when i was very young in the 1960s - but my wife's great great grandfather John Hynes born 1844 married Bridget Moran Burke born in 1845 in Ballintober Co Mayo per ancestry dot com. We are going to one of my family's parties - leaving NY on 8/21/13 and plan to stop by Ballintober during this holdiay. Any information on either Bridget or John would be very much appreciated
Thank you very much
john

Hi John,
Thank you very much for your message. I am delighted to hear that you are planning on visiting this month! It may be an idea to contact the South Mayo Family Research Centre while you are here to see if they can be of any assistance. Here are their contact details:

In the meantime, here are some places where you could try looking for more information:
Church Records:
You could try looking for the original marriage certificate in Ballintubber. Sometimes these marriage records list the couple?s fathers? names. Also, if the couple were born in the parish you may be able to find their birth records. Generally, (although not always) weddings took place in the bride?s parish of origin so it is likely that Bridget at least was born there. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Ballintubber/Burriscarra parish, follow this link:
As you can see records start as early as 1839 so hopefully you may be able to find something there. I suggest that you ring the parish priest in advance to try to set up an appointment. http://tuamarchdiocese.org/2009/12/burriscarra-ballintubber/
Also, the above link shows that South Mayo Family History Research have copies available.
Civil Records
You don?t mention when Bridget and John married. If it was after 1864 there will be a civil record of it as civil registration became compulsory in that year. If you can find this ther couples fathers? names will also be listed. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:

Land Records:
You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:

Hi John, I just did an internet search on my great great grandfather John Hynes from County Mayo and I found your post. I think your wife and I might be related. Are you interested in sharing information? Regards, Ed
