I am searching for family of Anna Walsh dob 1879 to John Walsh and Kate ( Cunningham) Walsh. Cloongowla Ballinrobe Mayo Ireland.

There are 7 children.  I know her brother Thomas Walsh lived  with his family in the same house on Cloongowla- house number 4 or 35 re: census.  In 1901 Anna, Nora, Thomas and James lived together -Anna ( my grandmother) Nora moved to Chicago, IL and are buried here.  I found another sibling Patrick here in Chicago.

In 1911 Thomas was with his wife Bridget Hennely and children and his parents per the census.

I would like to know if any of Thomas Walsh's family is still in the Cloongowla cottage?

There are several Walsh's- her siblings I cannot locate.  Anyone knowing Walshes?  Thank You!

  • Hi Kathleen,

I just happened to reply to a post on the message boards on Ancestry.com from someone else who appears to be connected to your Walsh family.  You can find the original posting under the Ancestry message boards under categories-Localities, UK & Ireland, Ireland, Mayo, General.  The original post is dated 23 Jun 2011 from a Julianne Gavin entitled-Walsh from Cloongowla, Ballinrobe, Mayo.  It appears that this individual did indeed find a relative who is still living on the property, so you may be in luck there.  I only posted my question a few days ago, and I'm not sure if Julianne is still active on Ancestry, but a message that she posted 3 Oct 2011 states that she did find family still in Cloongowla.

The reason for my posting was to inquire about the Hennelly connection.  My gr. grandmother was Catherine Hennelly (1854-1931), daughter of Thomas Hennelly and Maria Barrett from Cloongowla.  She may be related to your grandmother's sister-in-law.

Anyway, it's doubtful that you have information on the Hennelly side, but I just wanted to pass along the Walsh post information to you since it appears to be the same family connection.

    Best of luck!

    Brian

  • Thank you Brian-- I have tried to contact Julianne myself within the last 6 mos or so.. I saw her tree and sure enough... related!  However, she has not contacted me back.

I don't have info on Hennelly other than my grandmother's brother Thomas married Delia/Bridget and per the 1911 census lived in the same house my grandmother grew up in.. (with the parents).  My grandmother came to the states by then.  So...trying to figure how this works.. but yes, there would be a relation to my grandmother... yep- her sister in law!

I think Julianne found her Hennely- married my Walsh and is good on that side.  I hope she responds to you- I closed my ansectry acct- but am searching other links for Kane and more Walshes.. Thanks again for the info!!--Best of luck to you on your search- I will keep in touch should I come across anyone for you.

Feel free to email me or post anytime.. you never know who finds who!

  • Have you tried the e-mail (below) from the Walsh relative in Cloongowla that was in one of the posts?  I was going to wait to see if I received a response from Julieanne but since you haven't heard from her, maybe she is not actively on Ancestry anymore.  Just curious if you tried them or not.

  • No problem, I'm slightly confused whether this was one of the relatives actually in Cloongowla or somewhere else.  There were so many postings that it's confusing.  In any case, either way they were probably in touch with Julieanne and would most likely have the kind of information you are looking for.

If you wouldn't mind letting me know how you fare, I will then attempt to contact them as well if they are in Cloongowla.

    Thanks,

    Brian

  • I just re-read some of the posts...the cloongowla@hotmail.com address belongs to Josephine Walsh, wife of Jack Walsh who is the gr. grandson of Thos Walsh and Bridget Hennelly.  Jack's brother David still lives on the family farm in Cloongowla, so they should have the info!

Hello from Fort Worth, TX! If you have hints come up from "Cloongowla", that is Josephine Walsh whose husband, Jack, is the son of Patrick Walsh, your uncle. Jack's brother, David, still lives on the farm in Cloongowla. Are you in touch with that branch of the family? Thanks so much for writing!

  • Thanks for the update Kathleen and you're very welcome!  I'm always happy to assist if I notice something that may be helpful to someone else.  We're all in the same boat here looking for hints and information!

I saw your message on the Ballinrobe website and have posted there as well.  I hope that it's not an imposition for them, I don't want to inundate them with questions while they are helping you out at the same time, but hopefully when they do have time, they might be able to look into my question.

So happy that you've connected with your Walsh relatives.  I hope you continue to find out more information about your family.

    Regards,

    Brian

    Joesphine and Jack are wonderful!

I was talking to my friend who is on Ancenstry and told her you had helped me.  Told her your last name and she is searching for McKeon's in or near Galway.  I will send you a link to her Ancestry and maybe she can help you out.

Have a great day & tons of thanks,
