I am trying to locate the birthplace of my great grandmother, Mary Kane.
In 1858, she was living in Ottawa, Canada where she married Cornelius Shea (of Glannaheera, Kerry). On their marriage information, it said Mary was the daughter of Thaddeus Kane and Bridget Lydel.
There is no known Lydel but it may have been a misspelling of Lydon. I see in Griffiths Valuation that a Thaddeus Kane lived in the town of Ballinrobe on New Street while a Thomas Lydon (his father-in-law???) lived on Church Lane.
Does anyone know anything about these two families or the birth of my great-grandmother? Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!
The RC baptismal records for Ballinrobe start in 1843 and marriages in 1850. Here is a link to the parish register.

Very likely Bridget was born pre-1843 so her record would not be available. I did search Roots Ireland for any Kane baptismal records with a father with a name starting with a T and a mother with surname Lydon and got no record.
Civil registration started in 1864. I looked for a death index record for Thaddeus in the Ballinrobe area but did not see a record. I did locate a possible record for Bridget. Currrently, www.irishgenealogy.ie has images of death records startting in 1891 but we are expecting that the images for the records from 1864-1890 will be available in the near future.
Let me know if you have any questions. You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Roger,
Thanks so much! (You do get around. This isn't the first time you've helped me.)
I'm about 25% of the way through the marriage records. The quality is pretty good and I've seen Kane and Cain plus Lydon and Lydane. Also, so far all have been Thady and several have been Biddy (that's short for Bridget, right?).
When I asked a question in another parish, you suggested the DNA test. I've done that and subsequently found a Kerry DNA Facebook group that has been helpful. I see there is one for Mayo so I've requested to join that.
Thank you for the death information on Bridget Kane. I look forward to the release of the earlier records.

Yes, Biddy is a nickname for Bridget. Delia is another variant. All the best with your research.
