Looking for information about William Jennings (1800- 1901) and Bridget Ferguson (1800- 1901) they are my paternal 3rd Great Grandparents.

Their son Tobias moved to Glasgow Scotland. I am looking into the Irish branch of my paternal tree. William and Bridget are as far back as I could get. According to the 1901 census Bridget and William were still alive and noted as being 100 years old.

I would be grateful of some help if it is feasable.

Kind regard

  • Hello again Mandy!

I think the ages in the 1901 census were a little inflated. I located a civil death index record for a William Jennings born 1808 and died 1906. I found two Bridget Jennings records for Bridgets born in 1816 who died in late 1901 and 1906.

I was unable to find a marriage record in Ballinrobe. Likely they married prior to 1850 when marriage records start for the Ballinrobe RC church. Have you identified all of their children?

  • Roger,

thank you so much for this information.

I only have two children found, though I am sure there are more :)

    1. Tobias Jennings 1820 born Westport Co. Mayo (this is my paternal 3rd GGrandfather. He married Margaret Keenan Feb 1854 • Oughaval RC parish, Westport, Co Mayo. Ireland. It appears they moved to Glasgow Scotland around 1873 after the birth of their last child Patrick born 1873 in Westport, Co. Mayo.)

    2. William Jennings 1861 born Westport Co. Mayo.

Can I please ask I was a little confused with the information you gave me saying Co. Galway, Mayo.? Could you explain this ?

    Many thanks and appreciation again

  • Mandy:

Registration districts in Ireland each cover a number of civil parishes. The Ballinrobe registration district covers wholly or partially 15 different civil parishes in south Mayo. The district also covers part of Ross civil parish in Co. Galway. The record I provided reflects that Ballinrobe district covers two counties. Sorry for the confusion.

The record below may be for a daughter of William and Bridget. Other children may have been born before records are available.

  • Mandy, I was wondering if you could private message me at 2b7380@att.net. My grandfather and great grandfathers were also Tobias Jennings. I have been trying to sort out all the Jennings families (particularly those that were cobblers) in Ballinrobe. My Tobias Jennings was born around 1845 and was a shoemaker who left and arrived in New York where he continued as a shoemaker in Yonkers. I've seen that there are a handful of Tobias Jennings that were born in other parts of County Mayo aside from Ballinrobe and I am working on trying to see how they are all connected. Tobias Jennings seems like too unusual a name to be not be connected somehow it seems to me. Hope to hear from you and anyone else who might know about these families.

  • Hello again after a while of researching.

Can someone please help, if you can?

The document is on on www.ancestry.ca  Ireland Catholic Parish Registers 1655- 1915

I found a marriage for my Tobias Jennings to Margaret Keenan 20th Nov 1855, marriage plave Aughaval, Mayo, Ireland.

On the same page and date I also found a Thomas Jennings marriage to (illegible on document) for the same.

I am unable to find anytoher information and was wondering

    1. Is this a brother or cousin to my Tobias?

    2. Who on earth did he marry?

I have the parents of Tobias Jennings as William Jennings and Bridget Fergus ( Ferguson)

I have hit a brick wall with my Jennings family in Co. Mayo.

I welcome any feedback and thank you in advance.

  • Mandy:

I've been away for a week. I looked on the Aughaval register and did not see the records you mentioned in November 1855. Could you send me a link from the register that shows the two marriages? Thanks!

  • I am also looking for information regarding Jennings.

My 2nd great grandfather - Joesph F Donnelly married Margaret Jennings, born 1956 in Ballinrobe. They were married in the Roman Catholic Church of Ballinrobe on 22 February 1876.

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1876/11161/8088597.pdf

On the marriage certificate her father is listed as William Jennings (Labourer) but the trail goes cold here. Looking for any information in regards to William and his partner (name unknown).
